The #Anime-cel Page
Hi, welcome to The #anime-cel Page. #anime-cel is an IRC channel on
Newnet for collectors of anime cels on-line. The channel was created by
mAJOR eRROR and has since passed to Trebuchet, myself and some others!
We're a small group of people but hoping to expand so we hope that
this page helps us do that. We hope to spread information about the
existence of the channel and point people who are new to IRC in the right
direction.

Happy xane's day everyone! Thanks to all who contributed to the card!
Basic IRC Information
#anime-cel can be found on Newnet. Recommended servers
include irc.eskimo.com, irc.sweatnet.net, and irc.aohell.org. There is
usually
someone on from Noon PST to
Midnight PST but if there is no one around don't be scared, please check again
later. We ask that you please refrain from pirating/bootlegging on our
channel. Please follow usual rules of netiquette ^_^
IRC for Beginners
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Programs like ICQ have a similar system for
on-line chatting but IRC tends to be more stable. There are more comprehensive FAQs such as The mIRC IRC FAQ, A Short IRC Primer, and Random Newbie FAQ Google found, but I'll try to give an overview
here.
The first thing you will need is an IRC client if you don't already have one. Downloading and installation varies
but is explained by each on respectively. The ones recommended as easy-to-use by #anime-cel members include mIRC and Polaris for Windows
machines and Ircle for Macs. I use a text-based one with less buttons in
Linux. Additionally you can use a java based one on newnet's own site
(see 'Chat Now!' to the right) Chat on
Newnet's Site.
Once you have downloaded and installed an IRC client, the next thing to do is find us! You will need to connect
to a Newnet server. This can be done by typing /server at the prompt (usually a line or box located at the
bottom of the IRC window, here's a picture of an
mIRC window. In Ircle however, typing is in a separate window from reading!):
/server irc.eskimo.com
Next you need to join by typing at the prompt:
/join #anime-cel
Congrats! You're in! Now all you need to do is type what you want to say (don't forget to hit the enter key when
you're ready to say it) and voila, you're chatting!

Once You're On
There are many other commands to let you do
things
which are explained in the real FAQs. Here are a couple of favorites though:
/nick
/nick changes the name people see you as
/nick Keys_Away would print Your nickname is now Keys_Away on the screen and everyone afterwards
would recognize me as "Keys_Away" were I to type it.
/me
/me turns you statement into an action by you
/me finds her cel book would print Keys finds her cel book on the screen were I to type it.
"Ack! Half the people just left all at once! Was it something I said?!" If you're unfamiliar with
IRC and Newnet, this is a likely reaction to a netsplit. Remember which server you connected to
before? Normally in #anime-cel, people will be in a variety of these servers, but we all see each other so
it's hunky dorey. However, sometimes the servers fall out of sync... they lag from each other enough
that their connection is broken. So, the channel splits in two between that server and the others (on
really bad days 3-4 different factions!). Each group sees the other group as having left. Eventually there
is a netjoin and everyone comes back together (this time each group sees the other group as rejoining the
channel... so a lot of pointless "welcome back" 's get said... when really no one ever left!) As Trebuchet
once explained, it's like we're all in a big party room and suddenly a giant wall appears and and cuts half
the people off from the other half. To each side of the room, it looks like the other side left the party.
But, eventually the wall is moved away and each group sees the other group as back at the party.
One thing to note is that there is always some lag between servers (and between people and where they are
from). Usually this is milliseconds so it is no big deal. However, when this gets to be many seconds, it
can be quite hard to hold a conversation. It's kind of like that big party room only one person hears what
everyone says 30 seconds later, then he responds, then the other guests hear him another 30 seconds later.
He would be replying to things that people stopped talking about a while ago!
