Backup tape rotation

Now that we (will) have a tape backup system, we need to make a tape rotation system.

Data to back up

• Home directories: Currently 200GB
• Mail: Currently 17GB
• Server backups: Probably ~100-200GB for full images of our servers

Tape rotation goals

Before we can come up with a rotation scheme, we need to figure out what we want in terms of backups (off-site in the IMSS tape vault and sitting in tapes in the server closet)

• The tape vault will contain a full backup (every 3 months), incremental monthly backups, bi-weekly mail backups, and 3-month server backups

Home directories

• Nightly AFS backup volumes

• Full backup every 3 months (into vault)
  • Monthly
    • Weekly
  • Monthly incremental (into vault)

• Keep every year forever

Mail spools

• Get backed up with home directories
• Bi-weekly into vault

Servers

• Monthly onto tape
