Documentation:Shellservers
Shellservers
The shellservers are the machines that you typically log into. They are currently all Core2 Duo machines with 2 or 3gb of ram. Some of them have nVidia 8600GT graphics cards and are set up as graphical terminals in our lab. To use them, you should ssh to "to.ugcs.caltech.edu". This address points to the shellserver that (probably) has the lowest load.
Acceptable Uses
Shellservers can be used for almost anything that complies with our Acceptable Use policy. Because many people may be using the machine you are logged in to, we ask that you be considerate of the jobs you run on it. We ask that you not run long jobs that load both cores of the machine- this makes them heavily bog. If we notice that your job is bogging down the machine, we may kill it and send you an email about it. We also ask that you not run the same job on too many machines, as this harms everyone's use of the machines.
If you want to run cpu-intensive jobs without worrying about these restrictions, please use our mortals subcluster.
If you will be running cpu or memory intensive jobs on shellservers or mortals, give us a heads up. This way we can contact you if there are any issues, and we'll also be able to answer any questions you may have.
Current Status
You can see the current status of the shellservers by running "ruptime-shell" and "rwho-shell" from any of the shellservers. You can also view this information online at http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/rwho and http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/ruptime
