We have a few issues that we need to start thinking about to plan for the next year.
Athena
Problem: The machine that once was athena is dead. We have a few options:
- Fix athena using the old drives and cases. We'd need to either get an older motherboard donated, or buy a new motherboard ($100), cpu ($100-200), ram ($100), and power supply (lots). Is it worth it to get a half-assed machine?
- Replace apollo and use current apollo as new athena. We could get a kick-ass machine for $2000-$2500- this is $1300 for barebones chassis, $250-400 for CPU(s), $100-200 for ram, and $500+ for disks.
- Change the role of athena- it turns out we don't need the extra space right now (we're using around 400gb on apollo for home dirs). We could put two of its drives in the 1U P4 we got from student affairs, and two more of the drives in persephone (this would be nice because then persephone could keep a full backup of our systems on disk).
Colocating policies
At the current rate, we will run out of colocation space pretty quickly. We need to decide what we're going to do, if anything, to restrict the availability of colocation space.
- I think that people who already have machines here, clubs, houses, and former admins get priority Jdhutchin@ugcs.caltech.edu 10:29, 23 August 2008 (PDT)
- We should also stop advertising it so much Jdhutchin@ugcs.caltech.edu 10:29, 23 August 2008 (PDT)
Other services
We need to decide what other services we want to offer to the community and how to implement them. See also Wishlist
