This page gives a summary of the steps needed for a new non-pilot to join the Caltech/JPL Flying Club and begin instruction.

The Paperwork

First, you need to obtain and fill out a number of forms:
  • Member Information Form
  • Flight Proficiency Record
  • Release Form
  • Voting Proxy
Get these forms, as well as a copy of the Rules and Procedures from any member of the AACIT Board of Directors
Once the forms are filled out, get them back to a board member.

Pay the Treasurer

Next, you must pay a deposit and your first month's dues. Send this payment to the treasurer. When the paperwork is done, the next step depends on your status, as described in the Rules and Procedures.

Approval Process

  • Member of the Caltech Community
Barring any problems or oddities on your application forms, you are ready to begin instruction.
  • Not a Caltech community member - hence applying for Associate Membership
There are a limited number of associate memberships available. These applications must be reviewed by the AACIT Board of Directors before a final descicion is made. Discuss this with a board member.

Ready to (learn to) Fly

  • Get an instructor.
You may now fly with a club approved instructor. It is in your best interest to ask around and fly with one or more instructors until you find the one you think would be best - the two of you will be spending alot of time together!

Enjoy

Learning to fly is a challenge, to say the least. Expect to take from four months to a year and a half to get your license, depending on the time and money you have available. Also expect to spend from $2000 to $4000 from start to finish on airplane rental, instruction dues, et cetera. But when you make a perfect landing on a golden sunset after a hard day spent perfecting maneuvers, or exploring an airport you've never been to before, you'll never forget that feeling of certain accomplishment and clear satisfaction.
