As well as slowly adding to my truly frightening collection of progressive
trance and breakbeat vinyl, I put together little tracks (the metaphorical
equivalent of collections of twigs held together with spit and little bits
of string) on my MC-303 (the metaphorical equivalent of spit and little
bits of string).
I will at some point endeavor to catalogue my masses of vinyl (you think
I exaggerate!), but for now I'll just tease you with my most recent happy
acquisitions:
December 17, '98:
Paul van Dyk: Vorsprung Dyk Technik (remixes 92-98)
[Deviant 4x12"]
This entertainingly-titled compilation is a diverse collection of PvD's
remix work. The standout tracks are 'Rendezvous' (composed with Tilt)
and his pounding remix of Binary Finary's '1998'. Though the latter has
recently received a domestic repressing on Kinetic (along with the tasty
Matt Darey mix), this pressing is of much higher quality, taking up the
whole of one side, so if you missed it the first time out you might want
to get your mitts on it here. Generally speaking, the good news with
this compilation is that rather than even trying to squeeze the 30+ tracks
from the triple CD onto ungodly amounts of vinyl, they chose 11 tracks and
pressed them well, letting them breathe properly. The bad news is that
they didn't really pick the tracks I wanted - the outstanding tracks on
the compilation are pretty much still available on vinyl; 'Rendezvous'
and '1998' have been recently repressed domestically on Kinetic, and
'Flaming June' is available on bt's full-length LP, which I doubt will go
completely out of print for a while. I had been specifically hoping to
get my hands on PvD's version of Sunday Club's 'Healing Dream', but no
such luck. My recommendation: if you missed the anthems the first time
out, get it. Otherwise, the rest of the 12" compilation is a bit
lacklustre, so spend your $30 on the CD set instead.
December 14, '98:
Musix::Do Ya See The Light [Bonzai]
Nice trance with a dark, deep break like no other - ripe for a crunchy
breakbeat mix-in.
Savana::Mind and Voice ep [fourD]
Pretty breakbeat trance. My favorite mix has a tough jungly bass
boom but retains the pretty vocal bits from the other mixes - it's an uncommon
fusion, and it works well.
Hybrid::Altitude/Kill City [Distinctive]
The B-side, Kill City, is my pick - breakbeat nuns - how can you lose?
You may also flatter me by sampling some of my latest musical creations
via streaming realAudio. They're compressed for 28.8 kbits/second,
which is the audio equivalent of putting them through a meat grinder, but
you can hear them without too much of a wait, so go for it.
You will, of course, need to download the latest RealPlayer in order
to hear these clips:
If you have any problems listening to the clips and you're using
the latest RealPlayer,
email me and describe your symptoms.
