Freedom is an interesting thing. It is drummed into us so heavily in school that we take it for granted. We pay lip service to it without bothering to think about what we are really saying. The concept of freedom deserves far more than that. Do you still remember the phrase "give me liberty or give me death!" Did you ever pause to think how powerful that statement really is? Here is someone who would have preferred to be killed, than to live one day under any form of restriction. We are told in school that this what we should be like, and yet we are also told that we can't go to the bathroom without permission. It doesn't occur to us to question this prohibition, that's just the way things are. You're a kid, so you do as the grown-ups tell you to. But not completely. They tell you not to fight. When the bully attacks you, do you remember that violence is bad and that you should tell a teacher instead of fighting back? They tell you not to swear. Do you stop? Even when you break your arm? Remember those jokes you used to tell your friends? The ones your parents would have grounded you for a month for saying if they knew? Well now the U.S. goverment has decided that it doesn't want those jokes told or those swears said anymore. So now It says not to do those things too. And you had better listen to It as you will be put in jail or fined large sums of money if you don't. And $50 is no longer a large sum of money. Today the internet, tommorrow the world!
Voltaire once said "I may not agree with what you are saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." He was putting his life on the line for the ability of someone to offend him. If he was willing to go that far for freedom of expresion who are we to put criminal penalties on things that bother us. Sam Adams said, "If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." We don't want you either. If you would rather be safe than free, you should move to singapore. They have a very low crime rate there. Then again, it's also illegal to chew gum there.
Ben Franklin said "Those who would sacrifice their essential liberty to gain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
I've had enough of this 'save the children' bullshit. Since when was it my responsibility to take care of your kids? Or vice versa? The children's upbringing is the responsibility of parents. I admit, It's a huge job. Most prospective parents probably don't realize just how big.
If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person, were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. JS Mill
