For external gear reviews, try the following links:

  • Rock & Ice Magazine's 2010 gear review (issue 185.5) has great info. They are more impartial than most Climbing magazine reviews. This issue provides nearly comprehensive listings of things like ropes, belay devices, boots, etc. They also have intro articles to each section that cover basic use and describe the features to look for. Their main categories:
    • Harnesses, Ropes, Belay Devices, Rock Shoes, Headlamps, Helmets, Tents, Sleeping Bags, Boots, Crampons, Packs, Cams and Ice tools
    • Their online flash version of the issue is super slick. Try out some of the cool views (like "magazine view")
  • Supertopo gear reviews are very in-depth, but they only cover a few items. If your item is covered, fantastic! They have some notable recent reviews, like this 2010 Ice Axe review.
  • REI's website has customer reviews for their products. Not great, but still useful.
  • Backcountry.com's website also has customer reviews. They seem to be a bit better than REI's reviews.
  • Summitpost Gear is an offshoot of Summitpost and has wiki-style reviews.
  • Colin Haley, one of the world's top alpinists, has a gear guide (a few years old, but updated periodically) at CascadeClimbers.com: Colin Haley's gear guide
  • Another alpinist, Andy Kirpatrick, discusses gear at his webpage.
  • Well-known alpinist Kelly Cordes has a blog, and, for example, collected comments on ice climbing gloves from many of his friends.
