If you have gear ideas you'd like to suggest, please list them below. Indicate how badly you want the item, from "will go on hunger strike until it is purchased" to "this item is not very cool, but I'd rather spend money on it than let club money go towards buying pizza for social events."

In general, we don't like buying gear that is easily available elsewhere (i.e. that you can rent at Sports Chalet or REI), or gear that is very "personal" (like rock shoes) or is likely to suffer wear-and-tear (like sleeping bags, or ropes).

We do like to carry gear like crampons and ice axes, since these are nearly impossible to rent, and they are fairly durable, and there is not so much liability concern about them breaking (as opposed to cams and carabiners).

  • We have a SIF grant from June 2010 and will probably spend it on MSR gear, since we now have a club prodeal with them. We'll likely get some more snowshoes, since these are popular, especially the MSR "ascent" models that have the heel lifts.

Contents

Skis, snowshoes

  • Snowshoes: see above about the SIF grant.
  • Is there any interest in snowboards (we have one), cross country skis (Da Vinci club has one), downhill skis (don't have any) or backcountry skis (don't have any)?
  • Interest in any kind of ski boots? Chains for cars? Skins for skis?

Big items

  • Tents: we have a few tents, but are a bit worried because they are easily torn and hence are not an ideal rental item. But we like to have a few since not everyone can afford their own, and the rental tents from REI are heavy.

Crampons, ice axes, ice tools

  • We have a new Petzl hybrid ice axe / ice tool, and we have a pair of old BD ice tools, but don't have any modern ice tools. Let us know if you really want them. We've avoided getting nice ones because they are about $400 for a pair, and many members have their own that they will lend out.
  • Ice axes. We have a bunch, and can always get more.
  • Crampons. The ones from 2006 are slowly showing signs of abuse, so might need to replace them.

Electronics

  • We have 7 avy beacons, at about $300 each. Get more?
  • We have an aging GPS. The Caltech Y has some too, that are better, but still beginning to be old. Get new ones?
  • Two-way radios. We have 2 pairs, but one pair has been lost since Dec 2009. Most useful for club trips. Get more?
  • Solar panel chargers? UV sterilizing pens?

From Edmost

I have some decent backcountry gear I would be willing to donate: A pair of Fritschi's Medium Size, a mid-width pair of Atomic AT skis with Fritschis, a pair of Garmont G-rides, size 27.5, and other assorted stuff I would be happy to contribute to the cause.
