Whitney Portal Road

Whitney Portal Road connects Lone Pine to Whitney Portal (the Whitney Portal Store is at the Portal, and the store is open in the summer). The road is closed in the winter, meaning it is not maintained or cleared of snow. However, it is not physically barred and climbers routinely drive as far as conditions will allow. We've taken many club trips here in winter, so have seen all kinds of conditions. Usually you can drive at least to the giant hairpin turn (labeled in the map), but sometimes you can drive all the way to the trailhead. In March 2010, we saw a medium sized avalanche that had crossed the road just after the hairpin turn.

If you want to obey the road closure and walk, you have two options: walk along the road, or take a trail up the canyon. Can anyone add details about the trail?
