Morgan le Fay

Sorceress

It is I, also known as Morgana, the queen of sorcery, transcendent of space and time. I cannot tell you how long I have lived, nor how many times I have been reborn. Most of you mortals know me best for the life I lived as the half-sister of King Arthur, fighting against his control to preserve the magical way of life. At the time it appeared that I was defeated, for the Druids and Wizards died out and were forgotten. But now, the work of over a thousand years has begun to bear fruit, as many have rediscovered the magic of the Earth and Sky, and there is growing fascination with ancient pagan beliefs and symbols.

My soul resides in the Faerie Kingdom of Avalon, invisible to all but those who choose to believe. However, when my work requires me to live within the mortal world, I inhabit a mortal body for a human lifetime. (I once visited John Waterhouse, a particularly magically inspired artist, who painted this enchanting portrait of me.) For the moment, I am the alter-ego and truer self of the mortal Belle. I practice my magic the way I always have: employing the natural laws of the universe, keeping the deepest respect for the Earth and the worlds beyond. Magic has long since acquired the more "respectable" name of Science, but its beauty and power remain unchanged. Contrary to the slander of some narrow-minded, ignorant mortals, magic is not a black, evil art reserved for those who have sold their souls to Hell. Magic touches everyone, all the time; it always has and it always will. But most do not begin to realize the power that surrounds them, indeed fills them. Even the greatest wizards and sorceresses of all time do not fully comprehend its magnitude, and perhaps we never will.

There are hints to my true identity in the character of my alter-ego: My voice tends to song, for my incantations are never simply spoken. I use crystals and stones in my myriad spells; I am a deadly archer and a daring adventurer. My love for nature leads me to be termed a "hippie." My apparent self is known to be "weird" and is often found in the company of other strange individuals (in truth, other wizards and such magical beings, disguised as mortals just as I am). I manifest myself most fully on All Hallow's Eve, the holiest night for magical revel, when all are free to be their natural selves.

May the glory and power of the universe lend you strength this day and always.
