Rather than list everything I used on each hike,
I've listed those items that survived the
entire Triple Crown.
Blue silnylon stuff sack (from Equinox):
I used a number of silnylon sacks, but only this one, my
clothing sack, survived. These sacks don't do well with
abrasion--at least, not 2000 miles of abrasion.
Little mesh sack (from Equinox):
Used to keep my little items in one place. Not only did
this survive the Triple Crown (with only minor stitching
after the PCT), but I use this as a "shave kit" bag both
at home and while traveling."
Homemade bugproof head-net:
An easy project.
Bark jacket (from Golite):
Doggone it, they don't make this one anymore. I sewed a small
patch on the back on the PCT, and all the zippers blew out on the
CDT (I added some velcro). Figure I can get another couple years of
occasional use out of it.
Polypro "long underwear" top (from Duofold)
Tiny ziplock bag:
Used for pills, etc.
Honorable mentions:
8x10 silnylon tarp (from Equinox):
I switched to a Ray Jardine-style tarp for the first couple
hundred miles of the CDT, then lost it hitchhiking, went
tarpless for 4 rainy days, and picked up the old tarp at my
next maildrop.
LT6 hat (from Tilley):
I gave the Tilley hat I wore on the AT to a young friend...
had to buy another for the PCT & CDT. The shoestring kept the
hat on the highest winds, though in really high winds I'd
put the hat in my pack and strap my hood on tight to reduce
wind resistance.
