The Kids In The Hall play most of the roles in this movie about a revolutionary new drug. Not nearly as funny as their TV show, but packed with enough characters, wacky situations, special effects and camera games to keep it entertaining throughout.

Braveheart W
Romantic Epic with much Mel about Scotland in the 13th century. 3+ hours. BB

The Bridges of Madison County ?
Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood fall in love.

Broken Arrow WC
Evil John Travolta steals two nuclear bombs. Endlessly silly, implausible movie with lots of action, witless dialogue, and special effects. If you liked Goldeneye or Waterworld, chances are you'll like this one too. RM

Jonathan Pryce and Emma Thompson deal with the difficulties of sex without love, love without sex, etc.

The trouble with Scorsese is that, since he can work miracles, you expect a miracle every time. This is not one of his best, but it's still a fine film. Great acting, less violence and bad language than you think, and all of it in Las Vegas, the #1 Entertainment Capital of the World.

Kids' comedy starring Christina Ricci about the friendly ghost. BB

The Conversation WW
A masterful character study by Francis Ford Coppola. Gene Hackman stars as a paranoid surveillance expert.

Copycat WC
Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver and Harry Connick Junior replicate the Silence of the Lambs with alarming fidelity. It's a measure of how good Silence of the Lambs is that Copycat is entertaining too. JY

Exciting and taut adventure that mostly focuses on the two main characters and their conflicts. See it in a theatre with a good sound system. BB

Crumb WW
A funny, disturbing film about underground cartoonist R. Crumb.

Michelle Pfeiffer plays the concerned teacher for a class of underprivileged youth. The movie is interesting, but somehow unfulfilling, so I don't give it a WW.

Some kind of sex thing. NC-17.

Denise Calls Up *
Some art-house thing, most likely.

Desperado WC
Uneven at best, Desperado has some funny moments, cool action scenes, and a gorgeous female lead, but the pacing and script are simply bad. Rent "El Mariachi" instead. AV

Devil In A Blue Dress W
It's 1947 and Denzel Washington is hired to find the girlfriend of the richest man in town. The mystery plot thread isn't great, but the movie has multiple good moments. RM

Remember that episode of "Danger Mouse" where DM and Penfold shrunk down and journeyed inside the Chief's body? This movie is sort of a boring version of that.

Steve Martin in good, but the script is pretty weak and uninspired. It's a pleasant enough diversion, but there are plenty of better movies out there. AV

Feast of July ?
Directed by Christopher Menaul.

First Knight ?
Richard Gere and Sean Connery are a couple of knights.

Fitzcarraldo ?
Directed by Werner Herzog.

Flirting With Disaster WW
As in his "Spanking the Monkey", David O. Russell starts with a cheesy, sitcom premise and kicks it into the stratosphere. In this film, Ben Stiller searches for his biological parents, with hilarious results.

Flower of My Secret ?
Spanish, with subtitles.

Flying Down To Rio ?
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance.

Forget Paris ?
Billy Crystal and Debra Winger fall in love.

Four Rooms NW
Largely a lazy, pointless, and unentertaining effort. Aside from Robert Rodriguez's outstanding segment, good moments are few and far between. AV (and MB agrees whole-heartedly)

Free Willy 2 W
Boy saves whale, whale saves boy. But the stunning scenery and footage of whales makes up for the plain plot. Watch the credits, too. BB

French Kiss WC
Predictable Meg Ryan romantic comedy. Kevin Kline is excellent. BB

French Twist ?
In French, with English subtitles.

Frenzy ?
Another film from Alfred Hitchcock.

Friday W
"Friday" is a fun and authentic look at one day in the 'hood. It stars Ice Cube and is a welcome, mellow, LA-style escape from the more hectic New York black-themed movies. AV

From Dusk Till Dawn WW
An amazing film. Robert Rodriguez combines a subtle, multi-layered metaphor for Hollywood movie-making with some serious vampire carnage. A word of caution: if brutality (a la Pulp Fiction) or gore (a la Dead Alive) bother you a lot, avoid this film. Written by Tarantino and starring George "ER" Clooney, who's a regular Bruce Campbell.

Georgia W
Jennifer Jason Leigh is exceptional in this character study of a self-destructive singer and her relationship with her middle-of-the-road sister. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars. AV

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers ?
I don't think any comment is necessary.

Happy Gilmore ?
Adam Sandler is the Bad Boy of Pro Golf.

Heat WW
With Hollywood making so many thrillers these days, one would think they could make one this good without even trying. De Niro is the master crook, Pacino is the master cop. A wonderful grab bag of supporting actors (inc. Ashley Judd and Jeremy Piven) and background songs make this seem more like a bowl of candy than a movie. Plus, lots of guys get shot.

I'll bet this is pretty frightening.

Home For The Holidays W

Jade ?
A mystery/thriller starring David Caruso.

Jeffrey ?
A gay guy, worried about AIDS, explores celibacy.

Johnny Mnemonic WC
Laughable from the first frame, Johnny Mnemonic actually has an interesting story, but the screenplay and direction are terrible. Cyber-cheese. AV

Judge Dredd W
Stallone shoots everybody. I mean, if the movie had been half an hour longer, he would've started killing members of the audience. A rather cliched plot, but it won me over with kewl special effects.

Jumanji WW
Robin Williams is surly. You should pay money to watch this. JY

The Juror ?
Demi Moore is a paragon of justice.

A Kid in King Arthur's Court ?
Looks like another adaptation of Mark Twain's classic novel.

Mute Witness ?
Some murder thing with a mute woman caught in the middle.

My Family ?
The story of a hispanic family from East LA.

The Net WC
The plot has holes, the computer stuff is bogus for the most part (what did you expect?), but I found the story entertaining --- perhaps because it's interesting to see a movie where the heroine doesn't already have all the answers. BB

Never Talk To Strangers ?
This is some kind of thriller.

Nick of Time ?
Johnny Depp has to commit a murder or he'll never see his little girl alive again!

Nine Months WC
A boring formula comedy. MR

Now And Then ?
A "coming of age" film.

True Romance W

Tony Scott directs, Quentin Tarantino writes, Christian Slater sells drugs,

Oliver and Company ?
Several animated pets rock the joint.

On The Waterfront WW
A lot of this movie makes no sense (especially the end), but who needs a plot when Brando's on the screen?

Once Upon A Time In America-Director's Cut W
Any movie that's 3:47 is going to have it's ups and downs--I'm happy to report that this one is mainly ups. The price of grandeur on a large scale is cheesiness in the details. Starring Robert DeNiro and an excellent James Woods as two little boys who grow up and grow old. (Note on the print: The director's cut is much better than the shorter studio cut. The State's print is OK, but they skipped a reel when I was there.)

One From The Heart ?
A strange romance from Francis Ford Copolla.

Othello ?
Shakespeare's tale of betrayal, starring Lawrence Fishburne.

A bunch of kids enter a solar-powered car race. Even if they don't win, I expect they'll learn something important about life.

Steven Spielberg's masterful parody of classic Hollywood adventure films. An exciting and hilarious thrill ride. Plus, these guys get their faces melted off.

Rear Window W
James Stewart is a paranoid invalid in this goofy Hitchcock classic.

Reservoir Dogs WW
Tarantino's bloody debut. A good flick, but not something for the squeamish.

Restoration ?
Robert Downey Jr. is a doctor in mid 1600s England.

Richard III WW
Shakespeare's evil and scheming Richard III is set in an alternate 1930s fascist England. All the dialogue is Shakespeare's, and the pseudo-Nazi production design and powerful acting make this a phenomenal production. AV

Richie Rich ?
Macaulay Culkin is the poor little rich boy.

Rob Roy WC
Good actors in a pretty good epic movie. BB

Rumble In The Bronx W
Action comedian Jackie Chan tries to save a grocery store from thugs by doing various exciting and hilarious things. Not the best JC film ever, but still much, much better than most action films out there.

Run of the Country ?
I really should read the newspaper before I try to write these.

Sabrina W
Good romantic comedy with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond. Takes a while to warm up, but is thankfully bereft of schmaltz. Take a date. AV

The Show ?
"You wanna know wassup in the 'hood? Listen to hip-hop."

Showgirls WC
Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but not much more than competent filmmaking with a bunch of boobs. See it to support the NC-17 rating. AV

The Silence of the Lambs WW
One of the most complex and intelligent thrillers out there. Always worth another viewing. From Thomas Harris's novel.

Smoke WW
Harvey Keitel and William Hurt lead a cast of characters revolving around a Brooklyn cigar shop. Directed by Wayne "Joy Luck Club" Wang, but not sappy at all. Good drama about human relations. AV

Something To Talk About WW
Julia Roberts discovers Dennis Quaid is cheating on her, and struggles to deal with this. While some of the characterizations serve more as caricatures, I found it pretty entertaing. BB

Total Eclipse ?
This is sort of a bad name for a film, if you think about it.

Toy Story WW
Computer-animated toys have an exciting and profitable adventure. Very funny and imaginative.

Twelve Monkeys WW
Director Terry Gilliam has always been visually and conceptually interesting, and in 12 Monkeys he gets everything else right, too. Best sci-fi in years. AV

Denis Leary and the radiant Sandra Bullock are a couple of crooks.

The Two Jakes *
The sequel to Chinatown.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ?
Another foreign film.

A Walk in the Clouds W
If you can overcome Keanu Reeves' inability to act, this is a pretty good romance, although very predictable. The setting is gorgeous (even the parts they filmed in Pasadena City Hall). BB

When Night Is Falling ?
Circus performer meets academic. They have sex. They are both women.

While You Were Sleeping WW
A very original romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock in an excellent role. BB
