11-1-2004 (2:50am):

I'm finished with the Alley Assassin 2004 web site. The target sign-up sheet is posted in the Lounge, and I await the slaughter. I mean, fun.

11-7-2004 (7:00pm):

The game begins tonight at midnight. I've posted the targets online. Get your bombs set, and start planting at twelve.

11-7-2004 (10:00pm):

Added and fixed some targets. Slight updates to the rules.

11-8-2004 (12:00 am):

The game begins.

11-8-2004 (9:27 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Eben Olsen
What happened:

George Hagstrom defuses a bomb Eben Olsen planted inside his room. George apparently discovered it around 7 am and, unable to awaken any alleymates to defuse it for him, braved the task himself. He was successful and earned himself the first defusal.

Point Changes:

Kremlin (0):
    +5 (defused bomb)
+4 (bravely defusing it yourself, risking death)
-2 (not being around to save your target)
    +1 (first defusal)

Vatican (0):
    -5 (failed attempt)
    -1 (he could see it)
    +1 (first attempt)

11-8-2004 (9:52 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Kenny Osland
Assassin(s): Valerie Syverson, Jesse Liptrap
What happened:

Michael I. writes: Defuse by Mike White at 9:47 AM today. Kenny was taking a shower, Valerie and Jesse Liptrap clipped some keys to the shower curtain, Mike White came in and defused.

Point Changes:

Hell (0):
    +5 (defused bomb)
    +2 (good hygiene)

Heaven (0):
    -5 (failed attempt)

11-8-2004 (10:22 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: John Bender
Assassin(s): Scott Rayburn
What happened:

John Bender narrowly escapes death from beer. A penny-filled beer can that is, planted by Batcave's Scott Rayburn. It was defused for the second year in a row, earning John a bit of extra cash (+ CRV).

Point Changes:

Womb (0):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Batcave (0):
    -5 (failed attempt)
    +1 (beer)

11-8-2004 (11:18 am):

Event: KILL
Target: Bart "MacGyver" McGuyer
Assassin(s): Eben Olsen and James Mao
What happened:

Around 1am, during his midterm, Bart gives in to the urges of his bladder and heads to the restroom, even after hearing noises at the door. His story at Tales of the Dead.

Point Changes:

Vatican (-5):
    +10 (kill)
    +2.5 (first blood)
    0.5 kills for Eben Olsen

James Mao (0):
    +10 (kill)

    0.5 kills for James Mao

Kremlin (8):

    -5 (only lasted an hour)

11-8-2004 (11:18 am):

Event: KILL
Target: Kevin Lui
Assassin(s): Bart McGuyer
What happened:

Bart used his ghostly powers to place a motion sensing bomb in Kevin's room. Kevin made the fatal mistake of moving in his sleep, causing his death. Full story.

Point Changes:

Kremlin (-12):
    +20 (kill)
+3 (killing him in his sleep)
    1.0 kills for Bart McGuyer

Vatican (7.5):
    -15 (death of target)
-1 (going to sleep after you knew Bart was there)

11-8-2004 (4:15 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Chris Moore
Assassin(s): George Hagstrom
What happened:

Eben and Chris were breaking through George's defenses to place a bomb when Eben set off a motion detector. It was labeled "george killed chris." A smart plan to use his defense plan as a bomb, but it didn't quite work.

Note the rule change: As of midnight tonight, spoils (defused bombs) go to the defuser, rather than the would-be-target. This makes the rules make more sense and give more of an incentive to defuse bombs set for other alleys.

Point Changes:

Vatican (-8.5):
    +5 (defused bomb)
    +1 (loss of spoils)

Kremlin (11):
    -5 (failed attempt)
+1 (the best defense is a good offense)

11-8-2004 (6:58 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Eben Olsen
What happened:

The drama continued in Vatikremlin as Bart defused a pennies-in-the-medicine-cabinet bomb planted by none other than Eben.

Point Changes:

Kremlin (7):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Vatican (-2.5):
    -5 (failed attempt)

11-8-2004 (8:09 pm):

Event: KILL
Target: Kenny Osland
Assassin(s): Chris Moore
What happened:

Radio shack strikes again. Chris uses a lever switch and buzzer to kill Kenny. Man, I remember buying all the buzzers Radio Shack had in stock. Read his email.

Point Changes:

Swamp (0):
    +20 (kill)
    +1 (Radio Shack buzzers)
    1.0 kills for Chris Moore

Hell (7):
    -15 (death of target)

11-8-2004 (8:51 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt KILL
Target: Bernadette Heyburn
Assassin(s): Chris Moore
What happened:

Chris tried to go for two in a row and take out B-Dizzy. Noticing that she went into the PC lab, he set four quarters on the door handle and awaited her death. Five minutes later he hears it go off, but apparently Bernadette didn't even notice.

Chris emailed me back saying that she actually noticed the bomb and died, but he just didn't mention that part. Try to decipher the original for yourself.

Note: Don't forget if you don't kill Chris before he becomes a Master Assassin, you lose the chance at those points and the chance to make Swamp lose those extra 15. Those 35 points could be fatal.

Point Changes:

Swamp (21):
    +20 (kill)
-3 (tell me whether or not you kill someone)
    +1 (two in a row)
    2.0 kills for Chris Moore

11-8-2004 (10:13 pm):

Event: KILL
Target: Drew Heltsley
Assassin(s): Sandy Ottensmann
What happened:

Drew dies from a key bomb coming out of the bathroom. Sandy has been guarding the Pub bathroom all day, proving that if you're a target, going to the bathroom is out of the question. Tales of the Dead

Point Changes:

Pub (0):
    +20 (kill)

Upper P (0):
    -15 (death of target)

11-9-2004 (12:51 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Matt Krogstad
Assassin(s): Chris Moore
What happened:

Matt Krogstad narrowly escaped death from Chris Moore's LED-in-the-electric-pencil-sharpener bomb. He set it off earlier, but failed to die due to a protective layer of batteries in front. He later noticed the bomb and sent in a defusal team, but it was too late.

Point Changes:

Swamp (39):
    -2 (lame bomb)

Heaven (-5):
    -5 (insufficient paranoia)

11-9-2004 (12:51 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Matt Krogstad
Assassin(s): Eben Olsen
What happened:

After returning the bomb, he comes back to find that he left the door open. Fearing the worst, he sent in his second defusal team who found Eben's buzzer-in-the-USB-port bomb, which was defused by Dan O'Hanlon & Jesse Liptrap.

Point Changes:

11-9-2004 (1:13 m):

Event: KILL, Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Scott Raburn
What happened:

George got hungry and asked Scott and Dima if they wanted to go to the coffehouse. Not wanting to leave Matt out, he went up to heaven. On his way through the SAC door, he triggered two bombs, one intended for himself and one for Matt. Both emails are on the Tails of the Dead page.

Point Changes:

Batcave (-4):

    1.0 kills for Scott Raburn

Kremlin (9):

11-9-2004 (1:49

Event: Scoring irregularity
What happened:

Just like the election, my adding isn't perfect. I forgot to add some points to hell for their first defusal.

Point Changes:

Hell (-8, not -15):
    +2 (pointing out my mistake)

11-9-2004 (1:50 am):

Chris Moore may be dead. I'm trying to figure out what happened. In any case it sounds cool.

11-9-2004 (4:17 am):

Event: KILL
Target: Maryam Ali
Assassin(s): Dima Kamalov, Scott Raburn
What happened:

Dima threw a bit of misdirection Maryam's way and enlisted Scott to assist in her destruction. Unable to breach her defenses, they planted the 120dB bomb outside her door behind a manila envelope. Maryam died instaltly returning from the PC lab. Email for this and the next kill.

Point Changes:

Upper P (-15):

11-9-2004 (5:12 am):

Event: KILL
Target: Jeff Kauffman
Assassin(s): Dima Kamalov
What happened:

Dima continued his night of death and planted a bomb for Chris in his back-left car door in anticipation of The Original Pantry. Well, Chris was too badly burned and paranoid or maybe dead, so Dima had to act fast. He got Jeff to come and to go get Joey while he changed the note. Jeff called the wrong seat and died as soon as he opened the door.

There's a reason the Amish don't use cars.

Point Changes:

What happened:

Chris is alive. Story at 11.

11-9-2004 (1:27 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Matt Krogstad
Assassin(s): Dan O'Hanlon
What happened:

I [Matt] received a package in the mail today. Since I wasn't expecting anything and didn't recognize the return address, I had the nice lady at the Tech Express set the box down instead of handing it to me. There wasn't anyone around to try to defuse it, however, so I took a deep breath, exhaled, and put my marching band training to work, smoothly roll-stepping all the way back to Heaven. I then had Jay open the box, where he set off two Starbucks frappachino lids on rubber bands, and found a note, "Dan O'Hanlon kills Matt Krogstad."

Feel the city breakin' and everybody's shakin' and I'm stayin' alive,
Matt Krogstad, the Kroggdawg

Point Changes:

Heaven (-6.5):

11-9-2004 (3:18 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Chris Moore
Assassin(s): Dima Kamalov
What happened:

After receiving at least half a dozen emails, I have come to the conclusion that the burning and non-explosion in the courtyard constitutes a non-scoring event. Here's something similar to what happened:

Dima wanted to run a scientific experiment using a can of butane. He enlisted Chris to assist, but Chris did not have a lighter, so he went to get one. When Chris returned, he poured the gasoline and started it. The sign stating that Chris "committed suicide in the name of environmental awareness" was lowered and Chris, thinking that he had to save himself from the deadly explosion to follow, tried to douse the flames with water. That failed, so he dashed through the flames, grabbed the can of butane and saved it from certain detonation.

I ruled that it was not a bomb for numerous reasons, the most important that Chris poured the gasoline and fully expected the burning. Also, for future reference, the note should be attached and no portion of the bomb should be activated by someone other than the target.

Point Changes:

Swamp (37):
+5 (risking life and limb to defuse the "bomb," burning yourself in the process)

11-9-2004 (2:14 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Chris Moore
Assassin(s): Keegan and Mike White
What happened:

Now that the situation with Chris is resolved, this event can be properly scored. Keegan and Mike White planted a noisemaking keychain bomb to go off when Chris opened the door. Luckily for the extremely badly burned Chris, Laura opened the door.

Point Changes:

Swamp (42):

11-9-2004 (4:38 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Shawn "Real Shawn" Ligocki
Assassin(s): Nathan "Fire from Heaven" Lau
What happened:

I [Shawn] was running a bit late for class and apparently Nathan was counting on that. He had set up a cardboard box against the door filled with cans. There were 14 people in the class so he must have deduced that I was the only one left. Luckily, I had an honorable bodyguard/roommate [Xuan "Fake Shawn" Luo] who opened the door to the class for me and saved me from almost certain death.

The look of anguish on Nathan's face was priceless.

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Matt Krogstad
Assassin(s): Bart, Eben, and George
What happened:

My semi-charmed life continues. I went to turn in my 125 set at 5pm and noticed my midterm in the pile of uncollected. There being no aid around, I bravely but carefully opened the blue book, and picked out the paper clips between the second and third pages, left by Bart, Eben, and George.

What happened:

I "bombed" his midterm by placing a small sheet of paper folded and cut so as to look pointy.
It was "supposed" to function as a pop up type thingy, kind of like the idea you guys had for the little T and Charleton Heston. Apparently it didn't look very knife like.

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Mike Wilson
Assassin(s): Scott Raburn
What happened:

At 6:55pm, Scott Raburn made an attempt on my roomate's life. I opened the door and skillfully covered my ears as I flipped on the lightswitch, only to find a bomb (the source of the noise) and a note saying "Mike your dead -- Scott". Upon seeing this I quickly pointed out the mistaken grammar-- it should have said, "Mike, you dead!" But of course, that's assuming he actually killed him, which he didn't.

What happened:

Have I got a little story for you! This evening at about ten to 10, I was about to open my door, but wisely decided to check the space between the floor and the door first. A certain Hellion Mike White had placed a spring in the space, which I got Jay to remove before it could kill me. That makes for five attempts in the past 24 hours.

If it continues at this rate, I may have to come out of retirement and kill him myself. Matt is a bomb magnet.

Last night there was an attempt on my life. I went to visit Arthi, and noticed that her room was unusually cold. But I thought nothing of it until... she asked me to shut the window and as I started to do so I noticed a bright red cup attached to the curtains. Carefully removing it, I noticed that it was full of change and keys and a note declaring my death. I deffused it by removing the note.

This morning at about 10:30 I went into the shower, and found that my shampoo/ conditioner bottles had been moved. I noticed them over on a shelf, and when I retrieved them, I found that they hid a bomb planted by dima meant for Nathan (nathan’s shampoo bottles had been moved to the same place as well). kerspatt!!    kerspatt!!
kaboom!!!    kaboom!!
to*matt*from*eben

Seeing as the TI-89 is a formidable computing platform, able to solve equations, take integrals, and run programs, it meets my definition of a computer, and since the message was only on a computer, it is a virtual bomb, and thus is no bomb at all.

What happened:

When I returned to my room on Tuesday (prior to being killed) I had triple frosh Lauren conscientiously go over my room to diffuse any bombs. She found some suspicious looking squares of bubble wrap taped to the casters of my chair. We assumed this was a bomb but since we found no note, and since shards of bubble wrap are known to wander into my room, we thought no more of it and discarded the bubble wrap. I was later informed by Sandy that the bubble wrap was, indeed, a bomb and that she had left a note taped to the underside of my chair. The note was subsequently found.

(19:05:00) CrunchyEggplant: this morningat about 9:20 am, i sneaked into mike's room and left pennies in his underwear. i happened to know that he stacks them in the second drawer in the dresser drawers, and always takes the new one from the top of the pile. i then left my note.
(19:05:37) CrunchyEggplant: at dinner, i had originally planned to throw a lot of rolls at him, coercing him into throwing back and getting dumped (in order to be forced to change clothes). however, he foiled my plan by sitting under the tapestry.
(19:05:54) CrunchyEggplant: i then used plan B: i paid for ALL of the mikes (5 of them) to get dumped.
(19:06:10) CrunchyEggplant: my plan worked ... mike got wet, went to change, and thereby died.

Jay said "Well that was subtle." I thought I felt something, so I lifted up the cushion and took a look. The thing I felt was a label on the couch, but I saw something else so I pulled it out. Lo and behold, I now have in my temporary possession a white beepy thing.

How long can Heaven's immortality last? Eternity?

Assassin(s): Lillian Pan, James Mao
What happened:

Down in the Coffehouse Lillian handed Dan her card with a death note on the back. I ruled this not a bomb because of lack of causality of the detonation of the bomb by the target. Flipping it over to see a note didn't seem to be enough of an action. The exam bombs I allowed because there was some device (pennies or a pop-up-book-style paper) that was activated by the target.

Then James attached an accelerometer to the cash register that was triggered the next time Dan swiped a card. This would have been a very cool bomb had it had a note attached (but it was not since they thought Dan to be dead from the previous bomb).

Please don't make me make such difficult decisions - make the bombs obviously within the rules - I will be erroring on the side of not awarding kills, as you can always try again, but you can't bring someone back to life.

I killed Dan this afternoon, in an act of pure evil on my part, that I should truly be ashamed for. The story…

Today for my lab class, I needed to go to Mead to use the NMR. I went over there, and there was a Chem 4 section taking place, which Dan happened to be in. I started using the NMR, and then needed to get off and wait so Dan could use it. This was an opportunity I could not pass up, although I should have, because Dan looked very frazzled. He actually specifically asked me not to bomb him when he sat down for the NMR, which I could not promise, although I did assure him that I had not YET placed any bombs. He sat at the NMR to perform his experiment, and I grabbed my keys, the only thing I had with me at the time, and placed them on the chair behind him and left a note under the chair. He rolled back the chair, the keys tumbled to the ground and he died. Which seems fitting, to die in Chem 4, as any chem major can tell you.

Dan's version on tales of the dead.

Moral of the story: Don't be a Chem major.

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Kjerstin Easton
Assassin(s): Mike Wilson
What happened:

It's nice to see the wheels of progress are greased well enough I don't have to bother to sign up to be a target anymore. This is fairly early in the game for someone to come after little ol' me, but, alas, there was a failed attempt on my life this evening.

Mike Wilson, a mild mannered flautist, tried to kill me at concert band practice by hiding a note and $0.26 in change under a piece of music on my music folder. By the time I went to retrieve the folder, however, the coinage had been jostled by some other bando and was quite visible. My first thought was, "Hey! Free money!" and then I realized... Though I hadn't signed up... Maybe someone was trying to kill me. Ah, the paranoia.
I've been killed at band practice before.

Now I wonder if there was more change.... Maybe I should have looked under the seats in the auditorium -- a coffee refill is only $0.60 at the Red Door, after all.

Anyhoo, I'm not sure whether that counts as a lame bomb (no one noticed they had jostled any change on my folder, and the note was still hidden under my
music) or a defused bomb (someone jostled it, so I knew there might have been some sort of bomb...or that it might just be free money), but you, the ArbitOr, surely know what is best.

So... Today I live. And, under Rule 3, if Mike Wilson wants his $0.26 back, he knows he can find me in the trombone section.

Since the bomb actually did go off, I'm ruling it defused by some unknown  person.

Apparently Kenny set a bomb for him last night (while helping to clean the shop) involving a microswitch, a really cheap MP3 player (rigged to play the Ride, no doubt, though this has yet to be determined) and a pair of palm-sized fold-up speakers. I clicked the microswitch and couldn't get it to go off. Apparently the microswitch was supposed to be soldered across the 'Play' button, but one of the connections was broken.

Even though it is extremely unlikely that Luigi could have set it off, it is still possible, so I call it defused, not lame.

What happened:

Sarah was exhausted from her near death experience and went to bed without even turning her lights off. When she awoke in the morning, her lights were set at a dimmer setting. She asked Phil to check it out and when he switched out the lights, he heard the standard buzz of death, indicating a defused bomb.

The question now is how the lights were dimmed. The prevailing theory is that she got up and turned off her lights in a semiconscious state, heard the noise, thought noise=bad, and turned the lights back up until the noise stopped, then went back to bed. Since she was half-asleep, she did not realize that it was a bomb, which would make it a lame bomb.

She was not aware that the bomb had gone off in the morning when she called in Phil, who then defused the bomb, so it is as if there was a lame and a defusal.

Note that I've modified the rule for the end of game to be one alley's target(s), to eliminate the situation where an alley can not kill anyone, but has to wait until one of their targets dies for the game to end. It also eliminates the possibility of only having far-away at-large targets left.

Shawn wasn't so easily fooled and had Xuan open his letter from the Registrar. Shawn was very badly burned but not quite killed by the blast.

I got two pieces of mail today: a package of dried fruit from my grandma and an innocent looking manila envelope from the "registrar". My roommate (Xuan "Fake Shawn" Luo) opened the manila envelope and handed it to me, I looked inside, saw some wires and a battery, handed it back to him and said "Huh, looks like a bomb". When he examined it more closely he realized that it was vibrating.

The envelope contained a self-proclaimed "blatant rip-off" of the registrar's course schedule with the courses:
D125a     Introduction to Being Dead        Status: Dead
Grading: Fail/Fail
D106a    Advanced Topics in Mortuary Science        Status: Dead
Grading: Fail/Fail
D214a    Really Really Dead        Status: Dead

    -5 (didn't even last 2 hours)

12-1-2004 (6:14 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Scott Raburn
What happened:

Scott's attempt at rerevenge was thwarted by loving, caring Anne Rajala:

while opening the door up to blacker from the SAC, i skillfully defused a two-cent bomb meant for george from scott.

then, selflessly, i used the two cents to stuff the stockings hung by the mantle with care. =)

Point Changes:

Off Campus (-25):
    +5 (defused bomb)
    +1 (donation)

Batcave (99):
    -5 (failed attempt)
    +1 (gotta love rerevenge)

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Scott Raburn
What happened:

It seems that Scott ran out of pennies (and grammar):

As I was returning from basketball, I came through the SAC. When I opened the door to the stairwell leading to Blacker, a penny and a washer clanked to the ground. On the ground was a note that read “George you dead Scott”

Point Changes:

Cannes (-19):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Batcave (95):
    -5 (failed attempt)

12-2-2004 (12:48 pm):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: George Hagstrom
Assassin(s): Scott, Jeff Graham
What happened:

I heretell there were two more failed attempts to kill me. One by Scott with a motion detector near one of the doors into Vatikremlin Swamp, which was defused by a random Darb, and another by Jeff Graham, shortly after I became a master assassin, who tried to put a bunch of bells in my tennis racquet bag, which was defused by Eben.

Point Changes:

Random Darb (?):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Vatican (1.83):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Batcave (90):

Kermlin (121.67):
+3 (George should get some points for all the not-dying)

12-3-2004 (1:14 am):

Event: Failed Assassination Attempt
Target: Chris Moore
Assassin(s): Scott Raburn
What happened:

Scott tried to kill someone other than George:

Sami was walking through Tunnel to his room and set off a motion detector bomb set for Chris by Scott in the soc team closet. I think this should count as a diffuse for Hell, since Sami spends all of his waking time here. Also, he's too lazy to email you.

Point Changes:

Hell (10):
    +5 (defused bomb)

Batcave (82):
    -5 (failed attempt)

12-3-2004 (5:00 pm):

The cannon has fired, the game has ended and baring any late reports, Pub emerged as the winner. The combination of seniors with little work and keeping their targets alive gave them the game. Congratulations also to Scott and Sandy for becoming Master Assassins (even though they died and became Lame), and especially to George for becoming a Master and then thwarting all attempts on his life. The House of the Munth somehow managed not to have any scoring events and somehow managed to keep both targets alive. Good work also to all those still alive and those that helped keep them that way.

If you have any suggestions for next year, email me and I'll pass them on to the next arbit0r.
