Generalized weapons are a way of handling weapon stats such that the more obscure weapons can be picked. One of the main problems with the way AD&D is handled is that certain weapons are so much better than others, that it is just suicide to pick the lesser one. This generalized system hopefully creates an even playing field for all melee weapons, so that role-playing and weapon diversity are encouraged.
A player can choose any weapon he wants, and it must simply be put into the proper category to identify its stats.
I got this idea from Emil, who used it in his own campaign.
