Student Profile: Peter (’09)

Full Name: Peter Sadowski

Hometown: Everett, WA

High School: Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy

Academic and research interests: I am interested in machine learning and finding ways to help people sort through the overwhelming amounts of information that computers have made available.  Last year, I worked on a clustering algorithm for intelligent advertisements (in collaboration with a post-doc here at Caltech), and an algorithm for the million dollar Netflix movie-recommendation competition (as part of the Learning Systems class).  Over the summer, I did a SURF at the University of Washington investigating new ways of measuring similarity for use in various machine learning algorithms.

Other activities: During my time here at Caltech I have climbed Mt. Wilson a couple times, cycled down to San Diego, traveled to Central and South America, eaten at many of Jonathan Gold’s 99 essential LA restaurants, pulled my hamstring pole-vaulting for the track team, won some orienteering races with the Caltech O-Club, and attended every LA Yuri’s Night party since I’ve been here.

Future plans: I am waiting to hear back from the CS graduate schools that I applied to, as I hope to continue with research.
