Dabney House Roompick Rules PROCEDURE: To open the pick the secretary lists all open rooms and asks those assembled for the pick "Who wants a room?" A bunch of people raise their hands. Identifying the interested party with the highest pick, the secretary says "Whadduyawant?" A room is named. If someone's trying to scam a double as a single (or the triple as a double) the secretary asks if anyone wants the room at full occupancy. This process continues until all rooms are taken. The house secretary retains the privilege to require pledges of individuals and render all final decisions on room pick proceedings. All excom and office picks are given to a single person. Order within a class (or, technically, within any group of people with the same number-rank -- members of the social team, for example) is by lottery. Each person picks a card from the House tarot deck, and picking order is according to the rank of the card. Rank of Cards: Suits -- Trump, Swords, Cups, Pentacles, Wands Trump -- 21, The World, ... , 0, The Fool Cards -- Ace, King, Queen, Knight, Page, 10, ... , 2 Each person only needs to pick a card once a year. Normal, top-to-bottom ranking is used only for the Fall and Rotation Picks; for all other picks the order is reversed. CLASS QUALIFICATIONS, at time of fall picks CLASS TERMS COMPLETED Freshman - 0 completed, currently enrolled -> 2 completed Sophomore - 2 completed, currently enrolled -> 5 completed Junior - 5 completed, currently enrolled -> 8 completed Senior - 8 completed, currently enrolled -> 11 completed Supersenior - 11 completed, currently enrolled -> infinity (Being currently enrolled is only necessary when one is only meeting the minimum requirements otherwise. In other words, if one has finished 3 terms but isn't currently enrolled, one will still pick as a Sophomore. Same if one has finished 2 terms and is currently enrolled. But if one has finished 2 terms and is not currently enrolled, one picks as a freshman. If a future secretary would like to write this in a less confusing way, it would be appreciated. Also, if it could be written to be generalized to all roompicks (not just fall), that would be nice. I'm lazy.) SPECIAL RULES: Breaking a double: If a double/triple is broken between roompicks, the following may happen: 1. The remaining occupant may choose a new eligible roommate outside of roompicks and remain in the room. The room/occupants do not go to roompicks 2. The remaining occupant cannot find an eligible roommate: the room has become a new "most desirable room" and thus the room and occupant must re-enter the picking process at the next roompicks. However, by signing the housing contract at the beginning of the year, the remaining occupant is guaranteed a space in the house if he desires to stay. Though he may be required to move into a different room, a space must be reserved for him. Multiple House Card Picking: If a Darb is also a member of another house, he or she MAY NOT draw cards in both Dabney and another house. Roompicks by Proxy: PLEASE attend the roompicks meeting in person. It makes things much easier for the secretary. However, if you absolutely cannot, you should designate a proxy. Please tell your proxy: 1) That they are your proxy. It is important that they know this, as opposed to them saying, "Well, I *think* he's not coming to the meeting, and I think this is the room he wanted..." 2) Your room preferences. It is a good idea for the proxy to write this down. When your turn comes at the roompicks meeting, the proxy stands up and declares that he is your proxy, and then proceeds to choose your room according to your preferences. This proxy business works best when your proxy is also your potential roommate, since then he knows exactly what kind of room you want. Alternatively, the secretary can act as your proxy, but the secretary has lots of other things going on around roompicks time, so please try to get someone else. Unless the secretary wants to room with you. Which she doesn't.
