Ecphonema's A Cappella Friends

A cappella at Caltech is going strong! Go visit our good friends the Treble Makers, Caltech's women's a cappella group, and Out of Context, the newest addition to Caltech's a cappella scene.

However, Caltech a cappella actually goes much further back: specifically, to the '50s with a mixed octet from Blacker House. Organized by the Blacker "house mother" Eric Nordlander (previously of Cornell's Cayuga's Waiters) they sang arrangements of the Hi-Lo's, The Four Freshmen, and other standards.

In the photo on the very left is Lee Hood, next to two excellent altos from a local high school whose names are unfortunately forgotten. From left to right the other guys are Bob Thompson, Neil Sheeley, and Clyde Zaidins. Also in the group were Rick, Ron Aarps, and Tom Jovin. We heard all this from one of their members, RC Thompson, who we met last year at the West Coast A Cappella Summit. He saw one of the Ecphonemen wearing a Caltech sweatshirt and introduced himself. Thanks RC!

Here are some of the bands we have sung with in the past. Thanks for hosting us and/or coming out and singing with us, and let's do it again! If you need a gig in the Los Angeles area contact us at ecphonema@ugcs.caltech.edu and we'll figure something out.
