I started playing netrek in the Spring of 1994. I discovered the game after looking over someones shoulder in the lab, and immediately asked how I could play. Well, it's been 4 years since that fateful day in the lab at UCI and I've learned alot. I somehow managed to obtain a client and began playing at calvin.usc.edu. The USC server was where all the chumps played and at the time I fit in quite well, I imagine.
I learned the fundementals of the game on calvin and wormhole(guzzler), but it wasn't until I played at bigbang.astro.indiana.edu that I learned to win (genocide). The quality of players on bigbang was by far superior to that of any other pickup server at the time. As I continued to increase my skills my play was noted by some clues and I was invited to play in clue games. I got spanked in my first ever clue game, I don't think I even knew where my asshole was. I was initally harassed for being a "scum" but, eventually I gained the respect of a majority of the clue at large.
In the Winter of 1995 netrek was banned from UCI. I found the ban ludicrous and played until my account was taken away from me but, luckily for me my netrek services were needed elsewhere. =) A group of guys at Caltech wanted to form an INL team and wanted me to join, I explained my situation and was given an account to play netrek. =) I played for INL teams from Caltech my first few seasons(an organized league of netrek players). I don't think there was ever a season in which we broke .500, but I didn't care about our "record" then and I don't care about my teams "record" now. Initally I was a designated planet taker "Jitesh get 2 kills". I was a pretty good carrier because I was a decent dogfighter and had good court vision(I am not greedy as most carriers and I don't fixate). Eventually I decided to play with some other teams, and soon thereafter Caltech no longer formed a team(graduation does that). In my first season playing for an at large team , I was a space controller. I became a great fighter after being tooled on by estoppel . I learned the power of being an offensive fighter and have been one of the best dogfighters ever since. Nowadays, I captain most teams I play on, and usually invite guys who are fun to play with and possess a brain.
There are a handful of players I respect, I'll kindly list them: Twinkie The Kid, peskylittleshit, hoser, ensign, Akira, Beughler, Loki, Spaceace!, Bonbon!, scamp, EUTH!,Chrunchy Frog, Vlad, ryche, Scarface, Mangy Dog, and WingMan.
