IHC Minutes: May 4, 2005

meeting called to order in Avery

absent: Brandi Cossairt, Michael Chang; guests: Daniel O'Hanlon (for Brandi)

  1. Erik reports that he is now officially the Avery Chancellor.
  2. Scheduling committee interviews
    • Committee interviews starting at 10pm on Friday (SAC 33).
    • Signups will go down Thursday afternoon, and another set of signups will go up next to SAC 33 right after lunch.
  3. Storage space during South House renovations
    • There may be very little storage space that is readily accessible during the renovations.
    • Long term storage will probably be available at St. Luke's, which will be open to students when necessary, but this will not be very convenient for equipment used daily (such as Fleming athletics/social equipment).
  4. Peter gives a report on Tuesday's meeting with the architects in charge of the South House renovations
    • Each light fixture in rooms will have two halogen bulbs, and they can be switched on and off independently.
    • The rooms will have more comfortable carpeting then the earlier samples we saw.
  5. Housing cards are due next Monday (5/9) for all students who are living in unaffiliated housing for the summer.
  6. The SAC and Trunk Room are now supposed to be empty. Probably everything in it will be thrown away soon, so students should be warned to move their stuff out.
  7. The new and old IHC dinner will be held on Monday, 5/9.
  8. The manner in which joint ASCIT/IHC committee appointments will be made has still not been determined.
  9. There will be a meeting tomorrow at Parsons-Gates 112 about mural policy.
  10. Summer leadership conference and Caltech Leadership council
    • Erik reports that Caltech is going to send 5 students to a leadership conference over the summer. The goal is to train potential future student leaders.
    • The Caltech student leadership council is choosing who goes - they would like to send a mix of freshman and sophomores from all of the houses.
  11. Multi-purpose mods - Fleming and Ricketts will be sharing the multi-purpose mod near Fleming and Dabney and Blacker will be sharing the multi-purpose mod near Blacker (as was decided by the previous IHC).
  12. Spaces for summer housing
    • Jenny reports that Page gave a list to housing with some people living in doubles as singles. Although they had left open the required number of spots for summer students, Tim Chang then said that Page needed to reserve more spots for summer students rather then have so many students living in doubles as singles.
    • Final summer housing numbers must go to housing by 5/16.
    • Dan reports (from Ewen) that housing is suggesting that they would like some singles to be saved for summer students and for the mods to be single gender. The IHC agrees that these requests can likely not be fulfilled.
    • Peter reports that, under California law, people must be allowed to use the bathroom for whatever gender they self-identify as, so single-gender bathrooms don't work so well, anyway.
  13. Stewardship Committee
    • The IHC believes that the Stewardship Committee has the following role with respect to damage to Houses: When damage to a house is brought up by students or by Housing, the Stewardship Committee will decide whether the damage is the responsibility of students or the responsibility of Housing to pay for. Then, if they decide it is the responsibility of students to pay for the damage, the house involved decides whether the house as a whole is responsible, or only individuals.
    • The representatives to the Stewardship Committee should also actively look for and report damage to their houses.
    • The IHC discusses whether or not there should be an appeals process in case a student and their House disagree on who should be responsible for paying.
    • We resolve to produce a document that clarifies the exact role of the Stewardship Committee.
    • In particularly, the Stewardship Committee doesn't really have anything to do with murals and paint on the walls. (Unless they are classified as damage.)
  14. Challenges and Choices application deadline is May 13.
