IHC Minutes: May 25, 2005

meeting called to order in Fleming

  1. Student parking next year
    • Arturo reports that his damage rep asked about getting student parking spots in Holliston next year, and the rep was told to take it to the IHC.
    • We still have not spoken with the administration about this issue.
  2. Mike Conry reports that some of the modular houses have been put down in the wrong orientation. We should check that the split Dabney mods are oriented properly, so that Dabney gets triples and the other houses get singles and doubles.
  3. Propaganda Sheets
    • Some parents complained this past year about Rickett's propaganda sheets.
    • We discuss handing out propaganda sheets at the beginning of rotation or at frosh camp, so that students will have them closer to rotation and so that parents will not see them.
  4. Rotation for next year
    • How do we add additional meals to the rotation schedule?
    • How do we get people together for lunches in the South Houses?
    • We decide that lengthening rotation by a day or by a week is not tenable. We will probably propose that rotation start with a dinner on Saturday night, and then there will be a house lunch and a house dinner on Sunday. (This will necessitate coordinating with the Caltech Y, because they hold events on Saturday.)
    • All of the houses should check how much they spend on rotation and e-mail that to Jacob and Peter.
  5. Peter reports that there are some complications with the fencing and the water main for the mods. (Specifically, Caltech wants a 6-foot fence, which Pasadena approved earlier but is now saying that only a 4-foot fence is acceptable, and Caltech got approval for a 6-inch water main, but now is trying to get a 8-inch water main approved.) This may push back the move-in date for the mods by a couple of weeks.
  6. Peter suggests that we push back the date for giving away everything in the trunk room until the mod move-in date is finalized.
  7. We need to ask Tim what house presidents need to do in order to work for Housing this summer.
  8. Website, resolution, and definition changes still need to happen. Jacob can make all the necessary website changes, but the IHC needs to vote on resolution changes (which still need to be drafted) and definition changes (which also need to be drafted) need to go out to the house executive committees.
  9. Peter shows us a slightly-revised mural policy. There is some question as to whether the houses are giving up too much autonomy in the dealing with of "isolated incidents requiring immediate attention."
  10. Everyone on the IHC needs to be back at Caltech on Tuesday, September 13. The IHC retreat will be Wednesday and Thursday nights, or Thursday and Friday nights. This way, house presidents will be back for all of Sunday and all or most of Saturday for when the freshman move in.
