IHC Minutes: February 16, 2006
meeting called to order in Chandler
absent: Joey Koehler
guests: Brandi Cossairt, Peter Foley, Matt Walker, Jenny Hsiao
- The IHC briefly discusses whether or not it is a problem that Avery
elections are not until third term.
- Stewardship Committee discussion:
- The Stewardship Chair, Eddie Truong-Cao, has expressed an interest
in having, along with the whole Stewardship Committee, a greater
policy role.
- It is the understanding of the IHC that the purpose of the
Stewardship Committee is to officially determine whether specific
instances of damage to the Houses is accidental, wear-and-tear, or
intentional, and to serve as a liaison to Housing and the Physical
Plant to expedite the process of fixing maintenance issues.
- It is also the understanding of the IHC that the Stewardship
Committee would not assign blame to individuals. If damage was
determined to be intentional, it would be up to the House responsible
to determine whether it should be paid for by the whole House or by
individuals involved. (For example, so that damage caused during
House events such as construction of a House party, would be
paid for by the entire House.)
- Possible issues to follow up on:
- Some of the House damage reps have reported that Houses have
been charged for a number of breakages this past year that
were really just the result of normal wear-and-tear (especially
in the mods, which are shoddily constructed). The IHC should
check whether any Houses have had such unfair charges.
- The fire policy now has punitive fines, which is not really in
line with the Honor Code. The IHC would like either for these
fines to be eliminated or for CRC/fire violations to no longer
be called "Honor Code violations" automatically. Arturo will
follow-up on this with the old and new BoC and CRC chairs.
- Page House has lost their "signature book" (which contains signatures of
all past and present Page-boys). They would really like to have it back,
so if any House presidents or their House members have any idea where it
is, they should inform Page.
- Seven-day Task Force recommendations have officially been presented to
Margo Marshak, and Margo Marshak presented them to the Faculty Board.
The Faculty Board did not seem to have strong feeling one way or
the other on the recommendations (except for Ken Farley, who may have
specifically want the additional auxiliary money to come from
undergraduates).
- The task force is meeting again soon.
- Margo Marshak has the final decision as to whether or not the money
will come from other parts of Student Life and Auxiliaries,
we will still have 7-day board, or to somehow try to operate
at a larger loss than budgeted for.
- The IHC would like to see a follow-up task force that would
neutrally evaluate alternative proposals for making back the money
that 7-day board would have.
- About 15-20 people have expressed interest to Craig in sitting in on
Dean Curry's institute finances seminar class.
- The IHC needs to check with Tom Mannion about when the South Houses
are slated to open -- we (or the North Houses) may want to hold some kind
of welcoming or "welcome back" interhouse party around then.
- The IHC still needs to follow-up on why many student-faculty committees
to which the IHC appoints students still have not met.
- Jeff Kranksi reports that the MHF-purchased heat lamps were $50 more
expensive than expected, so each House that requested one should pay
Dabney an extra $50 or should request a slightly-cheaper model.
