IHC Minutes: 3/30/06

Meeting called to order in Chandler.

Guests preset: Helena Kopecky (Staff Psychologist), Dean Currie, Eddie Truong-Cao (Stewardship Chair).

Committee members absent: None.

  1. UCC Training (Discussion with Helena Kepecky)
    • None of the UCCs came to the joint UCC/Health Ad training session.
    • We should encourage UCCs to attend joint UCC/Health Ad psychological training sessions.
    • We will have one more meeting with Helena to help clarify any concerns about things she can help with.
  2. Meeting with Dean Currie
    • Introductions between Dean Currie and the new IHC.
    • Official confirmation of the theft of the Fleming cannon. We have no idea of the cannon's whereabouts at this time.
    • Discussion regarding construction at Caltech.
      • There are four major projects currently going on at Caltech: Kahil ceter for Astronomy, IST building, a Chemistry building, and the South House renovations.
      • Though initial budgets were set out, construction costs inflated far faster than expected due to a variety of things (Hurricane Katrina, etc).
      • The South House project was over budget, and it included things outside the original scope of the project (kitchen, serving utilities, and SAC rooms), so these became the first place to look for budget cuts.
      • Only $5.6 million has been raised specifically for the South House renovations (out of ~$32.6 million), so the rest will have to come out of the general budget.
      • The South Houses are done in the sense that they'll be finished, the North Houses are another story.
      • The worry about the North Houses becoming classified as historical buildings is a red herring, the biggest problem with them will be just raising the money in the first place.
      • Dean Currie's advice about the North House project: "There should be throughout the project a few students who go through the whole thing, i.e.- student representitives.
      • Regarding the last minute budget cuts to the South House project: "This whole thing is bizarre. Either you had students asleep at the wheel or you just weren't brought into the process."
