IHC Minutes: 5/02/06

Meeting called to order in Chandler.

Guests preset: None.

Committee members absent: Blacker and Fleming presidents. IHC chairman.

1. SURF students:
   • The idea has been raised by Housing to put all of the non-Caltech SURF students in a single house.
   • We think this is a bad idea.
2. Cardswipe security system:
   • No one likes the cardswipe system.
   • Aren't the mods supposed to be open from 9-5?
   • Cardswipe systems in the South Houses would just result in doors being propped open. It doesn't matter how secure the cardswipe system is when the doors are closed if they'll just be propped open by students.
3. No cats in the South Houses:
   • Because of the central AC, any cat allergens would be spread throughout the entire South House complex.
   • This problem exists because Campus Planning decided to go against housing's recommendation (of individual ACs in rooms) and install central air.
   • No one likes not being allowed cats.
   • This policy was thought up a while ago, but we only find out now?
   • Since the majority of people like cats, does that place the burden on those who are allergic?
   • Allergics could install filters in the AC.
   • Cats will still wander from the North to the South Houses, so banning ownership of cats in the South Houses won't really solve anything.
   • Bring up these ideas with Tim Chang. Maybe write an MHF proposal for air filters for the South Houses, or maybe only have a single cat-free alley in each house, etc.
4. For next time:
   • Invite Gonzo about INTERHOUSE.
   • What should we do when something happens that we're upset about?
