1. Be a bonafide, dues paying member of the House he will be
playing for and either
a. be a registered undergraduate
or
b. be approved by the IHC.
2. Be an RA living in the house that he will be playing for.
3. House Athletic Managers are required to report all non-registered
undergraduate and non-RA participants to the IHC
at the beginning of each term. New additions to athletic teams, (with the
exception of those made immediately after
rotation due to picks) must be cleared with the IHC at least a week before
being allowed to play. Only players on the
approved eligibility lists will be permitted to play. Additions may be made to
these lists on 24 hours' notice to the
Athletics Office.
Students transferring from one House to another House during the term will be ineligible for the remainder of that term.
1. A dues paying member of a House during the term for which he has paid his dues, with the exception of those persons exempted by sections (2) or (3) below. House dues shall, for the purpose of eligibility, be defined as the full $25.00 for members living on campus and at least half that amount for other members.
2. House members who have paid dues for at least three consecutive terms may, at the discretion of the individual House, be exempted from this requirement if all other requirements are met.
3. Exceptions to the above requirements for individual special cases may be made by a vote of the Interhouse Committee.
1. Any violation of these rules by a competitor will result in forfeiture of that contest by the House for which he is competing.
2. Failure of a team to appear for the scheduled contest will result in forfeit.
3. Any House which forfeits an Interhouse contest will count the game as a loss.
4. Games may be forfeited by either House at any time.
Exception: If a House plays an ineligible student, the first violation will result in a loss of the contest only. If the same House again plays an ineligible student, the house will be ranked last in the final standings on that sport, and will receive no trophy points.
See the Athletic Department memo concerning the medical clearance procedure for the Interhouse, Discobolus, and Mudeo programs.
If an assigned House fails to provide the needed number of officials it will be charged $20.00 for the first official that doesn't show, and $10.00 for each additional official that fails to show. For the second instance, that House will forfeit a contest.
For safety or other reasons, all House Athletic Managers involved in a particular contest, when in complete agreement, may make alterations to any rules.
Formal written protests regarding eligibility and riles shall be lodged with the Athletic Department by a House Athletic Manager not later than 48 hours after the disputed contest. These protests will be referred to the IHC for a ruling.
Jurisdiction shall rest jointly with the Athletic Department of the Institute and the Interhouse Committee and shall be subject to joint review, when necessary or requested, by the Faculty Committee on Athletics and Physical Education.
Students are expected to abide by standards of good sportsmanship while participating in Interhouse competition. Disruptive or otherwise inappropriate behavior will result in immediate disqualification of the offending student(s) (at the discretion of the sport moderator) and may result in futher action against the offending student(s) (e.g., suspension from one or more further Interhouse competitions) by majority vote of the non-involved Ath Managers, subject to approval by the IHC.
A team shall be composed of 9 players, but a House may start a game with as few as 7. Fewer than 7 shall constitute a forfeit.
1. The game shall be of 5 innings duration unless conditions force the game to be called before then. If the game is tied at the end of 5 innings, additional sudden death innings will be played until darkness. Games tied when darkness or rain prevents any further play will stand as ties.
2. Games shall start as soon as possible after 4:00 pm, and not later than 4:30 pm.
1. National Softball Rules shall govern play except that there will be free substitution with two conditions:
2. The batter shall not run on a dropped third strike.
3. A runner on third base may not steal home on a wild pitch or passed ball.
4. If a base runner leaves the base before the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, the Umpire will declare the runner out.
5. Base runners are allowed only one base on a ball thrown in foul territory or on a passed ball. The runner will make the base.
6. The infield fly ball rule shall apply.
7. Protests cannot be filed on judgment calls, only on interpretations of rules.
8. When the soccer field is occupied, if a ball is hit into the field the batter is awarded a double and the other base runners may advance two bases.
9. The out-of-bounds area along the left and right field lines shall be determined before game time. Any ball that crosses the out-of-bounds line will immediately be considered out of play and thus a dead ball.
1. Molded soccer-type cleats are permitted--metal cleats are not.
2. Team Managers or Captains will check out equipment from the stockroom, sign for same, and be responsible for its return.
3. The team designated as the visiting team shall have infield practice until 4:10 pm, and the home team from 4:10 to 4:20 pm.

Revised 4-2-03
a. The 2001-2004 International FIVB Indoor Volleyball Rules will govern all rules not named in the summary below.
b. The following is a brief summary of the major rules as they apply to Interhouse volleyball:
i. Definitions
1. Blocking: an attempt to intercept the ball returning over the net or preventing it from doing so. (Note: a block may not be pushed-it must be a defensive maneuver.)
2. Hit ball: the ball must be clearly hit; it cannot visibly come to rest at contact. (Note: sound should not be a factor in determining a legal hit.)
3. Line: marked lines and their assumed extensions.
4. Spiked ball: A ball (other than service) hit forcibly from above or at the level of the net.
ii. Scoring
1. Sideout scoring will be used.
2. Games will be played to 15 points.
3. Games must be won by 2 points, with no hard cap.
4. Matches will be best 2 out of 3.
iii. General Gameplay
1. Winner of coin toss chooses to serve or receive or the side of the court.
2. Playing area and team serving first in game changes with each game. (Note: it does not depend on winner of previous game.)
3. A second coin toss will be used to determine which team will serve for a third and deciding set.
4. Teams will switch sides after one of the teams scores 8 points in third game.
iv. Serving
1. Net serves are legal. (A serve that touches the net and makes it over the net is a legal serve)
2. The server may stand anywhere behind the backline and between the side out lines.
3. Serves shall not be blocked.
4. Serves can be attacked.
5. The server shall not be subject to a time or toss limit.
6. A double hit (when the player does not hit the ball with each arm simultaneously) cannot occur in defending a serve within reason (referee’s discretion).
7. The server’s foot shall not touch or cross the backline nor the sidelines extended.
8. The server shall wait for the referee’s signal before serving. A serve before the referee’s signal shall be replayed.
v. Substitutions and Rotations
1. A player may only play a position once during any six consecutive servers periods (clarification: “substituting through the sidelines” is allowed).
2. After a side-out, the new serving team will rotate clockwise. (A side-out occurs when the serving team loses the point.) (Note: this includes the first serve for the team.)
3. Substitutions may occur any time after a point or sideout and before a serve.
4. There shall be no limit on number of substitutions for either team.
5. Before the serve, each player must be in their correct positions relative to their teammates.
6. Players in the back row must hit from behind the 10-foot line when attacking.
vi. Lines and Boundaries
1. All lines are considered in-bounds. (a ball that lands on the line is in)
2. The net antennas are out-of-bounds. (a ball that hits the antenna is out)
3. Momentum can carry a player underneath the net without penalty, unless that player contacts or interferes with a player of the opposing team, in which case a point/sideout will be awarded to the opposing team (whichever is appropriate).
4. A player cannot play a ball that is completely passed the net over the opposing team’s side of the court.
5. The net shall be set at regulation men’s height according to the rules cited above.
6. Players shall not touch any part of the net
7. The posts for the net are considered out-of-bounds
8. The referees and the referee’s stand are considered out-of-bounds.
vii. Special gym conditions
1. Teams shall not play a ball that has been hit into the court of another Interhouse volleyball game.
2. If a ball from another Interhouse game (or any other game) goes into the court, play shall continue until the referee, at his/her discretion, stops play. If play is stopped the point shall be replayed.
3. If a ball hits a wall before hitting the ground, the wall shall be considered out-of-bounds.
4. If a ball hits a basketball hoop before hitting the ground, the basketball hoop shall be considered out-of-bounds.
5. If the ball hits any part of the ceiling, the ball will be considered in play if it returns to the side of the court from which it was hit and will be considered out if it continues over the net to the opposing side of the court.
viii. Blocking
1. A set cannot be blocked unless the ball has made its way completely passed the plane of the net.
2. Players in the back row cannot block a ball above the plane of the net.
3. A block must be defensive (referee’s discretion)
4. Players blocking may reach over the net, but may not contact the ball there until after the opponent has hit to return it. (Note: the blocker may not reach over to interfere with a set.)
5. The first block is not considered to be the first hit. Also, a player may successively block and hit the ball for the first hit.
ix. Contacting the Ball
1. A player can use any part of their body (including feet) to make a valid attempt to continue play.
x. Libero
1. All rules involving the libero will not be used.
xi. Timeouts
1. Each team will have three 1-minute timeouts per game.

3. Players will play an eight-game pro set with a twelve-point tie breaker. Add scoring system will be used. If both players prefer a two-out-of-three set match, the eight game pro set is ignored. If either player (or team in doubles) prefers an eight game pro set, the pro set prevails.
4. The House winning three of five matches will be considered the winner of the meet.
5. Final standings will be determined on the basis of won-lost records.
6. Forfeit - team manager may forfeit third singles or second doubles without forfeiting the match.
7. Substitution - the team manager may substitute in second doubles with the approval of the competing team's manager.
8. Rain - match should be made up by arrangements between houses. Team managers should check with tennis coach to reserve courts.
1. The Athletic Department will furnish tennis balls for matches to each House. Players must return the balls for future play.
2. Each player will be required to wear the appropriate tennis shoes and furnish his own racket.

4. Each team will be allowed 4 time outs of one minute each per game.
5. If the game is tied at the end of regulation time a 3 minute overtime will be played after a time out of 3 minutes. This will be repeated until the tie is resolved.
Current NCAA Official Basketball Rules will govern with the exceptions noted below:
1. Unlimited substitutions: All substitutions must report to the Scorer and Timer first and then wait for the signal to enter the game.
2. After a team has committed six fouls, in each half, the one-and-one bonus foul shot situation will be in effect.
3. No foul shall result in free throws except in the 6 team-foul bonus situation.
4. When the ball is lost out-of-bounds by a team, the other team shall pass the ball in from the point where the ball went out-of-bounds.
5. On a foul, the ball shall be passed in from the sidelines from the top of the key extended.

F.
Blocking
1.
Blocking is defined in the NCAA rules as follows:
Blocking
ARTICLE 1
a. Blocking is obstructing an opponent by contacting him with any part of the
blocker’s body.
b . Pushing is blocking an opponent with open hands.
Below Waist
ARTICLE 2.
a. Blocking below the waist is the initial contact below the waist with any
part of the blocker’s body against an opponent, other than the runner.
When in question, the contact is below the waist (Rule 9 - 1 - 2 - e ) .
b . Blocking below the waist applies to the initial contact by a blocker
against an opponent who has one or both feet on the ground. A b l o c k e r who
makes contact above the waist and then slides below the waist has not blocked
below the waist. If the blocker first contacts the opposing player’s
hands at the waist or above, it is a legal "above the waist’’
block (Rule 9-1-2-e).
Chop Block
ARTICLE 3. A chop block is:
a . An obviously delayed block at the thigh or below against an opponent
(except the runner) who is in contact with a teammate of the blocker, is in the
act of disengaging from the first blocker or has just disengaged from the first
blocker but is still confronting him. When in question, the contact is at the
thigh or below (A.R. 2-3-3-I and II).
b . A high-low, low-high or low-low combination block by two nonadjacent
linemen with or without a delay between contacts occurring in the neutral zone.
c . A high-low, low-high or low-low combination block by any two offensive
players with or without a delay between contacts when the initial contact
clearly occurs beyond the neutral zone (i.e., all involved players a re beyond
the neutral zone) (A.R. 2-3-3-III and IV).
Block in the Back
ARTICLE 4.
a. A block in the back is contact against an opponent occurring when the force
of the initial contact is from behind and above the waist (Exception : Against
the runner). When in question, the contact is below the waist (Rule 9-3-3-c)
(A.R. 9-1-2-XX and XXI, A.R. 9-3-3-VII, and A . R . 10-2 - 2 - X X X I V ) .
