Printing from the Apple Macintoshes

From the Macintoshes in the computer lab or anywhere on the campus AppleTalk network, or even from Macs connected to Ethernet elsewhere on campus, one can easily print to the laser printer in the computer room. The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4 MV is capable of interpreting PostScript Level 1 commands. From the Apple Macintosh computers, it is instructive to open the Chooser application from the Apple Menu. Ensure that AppleTalk is Active and that Background Printing is On. A rectangular window including two or three large (at least a quarter of the area of the enclosing window) rectangles should appear. On the left half of the window, there will be either one or two rectangles.
  1. If there is just one, then you should click on the icon titled HP LaserJet, or in the absence thereof, any icon titled LaserWriter or LaserWriter 8.
After a few seconds the name Ruddock HP should appear in the box on the right half of the Chooser window titled "Select a PostScript Printer" or Select a LaserWriter". Select this printer and (if using the LaserWriter 8 driver) press the Setup... button to ensure that the current printer description file (PPD) selected matches the printer, which in this case should be "HP LaserJet 4MV" or later. If not, press "Auto Setup". If the correct printer description file name is displayed, press "OK". You are now ready to return to your application from which to print.
  2. If, instead, there are two windows on the left half of the window, with the lower one titled "AppleTalk Zones", then pick a printer driver (HP LaserJet for the LaserJet (HP)). You should select the printer: Ruddock HP in Net6.
