Past in a Nutshell - The past in a nutshell, eh? Well, precisely 18 billion, 738 million, 193 thousand, 205 years, 7 months, 18 days, 6 hours, 13 minutes and 25 seconds as of.....now, the universe was born. For a long time there was just matter flying everywhere, but then local distortions in gravity caused it to begin clumping together. Eventually large clumps formed, and under the pressure from gravity, the first stars ignited. Large groups of stars clumped together to form galaxies. The stars underwent a solar lifecycle (star burns, explodes, ejects matter which forms planets etc, stellar mass collapses and reignites, repeat - or, for large stars, they burn, then collapse into black holes). About 14.25 billion years after the Big Bang, the matter around a newly coalescing yellow dwarf formed a small molten ball (the third from the new star) which began to cool. This planet becomes life bearing and eventually leads to the rise of human civilization.
