Audio

I am intent on becoming a media mogul, transmitting my sultry voice far and wide across the land. My fledgling beginning is the New World Campaign Podcast, which can be found here:

http://www.ugcs.caltech.edu/~kel/NWC/Podcast.rss

To listen to these audio recordings, you'll need a podcast player like iTunes 4.9 or above. You can also use any rss reader and click to download the mp3 files directly, but that can get rather tedious.

Another way to hear my dulcet tones is to listen to the LOA series: Lumbard On Audio. Here's my first foray into transcribing the TEK stories into audio format:

Do you want to read lurid accounts of my personal life for the entire world to hear? Let's get LOA-down! :-)

At some point, I'm going to start publishing a new podcast about the Human Assembly, as well as fire up another media-sized Old World Campaign.

In 2010 I got interested in ringtones for phones and I whipped up some I thought were cute:

Life Story

Historic Overview

I hail from a small town in Massachusetts called Dracut. My immediate family consists of my mother (Yun Sik Kim Lumbard), father (Thomas Everette Lumbard), sister (Vivian Moon Lumbard), and brother (Powell Tait Lumbard). For the most part, my family leads a life somewhere between "America's Most Wanted" and the "Mini-Series Of The Week". 8^)

I matriculated at the California Institute of Technology in 1988, and finally received my degree in Applied Mathematics in 1994. Of the six years, four were spent on classes, one was mostly research, and another was spent on a leave of absence precipitated by The Fiasco.

After graduation I worked at ORACLE Corp. for a year in the Applications Technology Group, as a software developer. The position was fantastic, and I acquired a great respect for the company and its people during my stay. But I still heard the siren song of academia...

In early 1995 I left my job at Oracle and returned to the Pasadena area to continue doing research for Dr. Robert J. McEliece of the Electrical Engineering Department at Caltech. I did the research for free, supporting myself with a few lucrative short-term programming projects. It was a very fertile and otherwise enjoyable year.

In the summer of 1996 I worked for the Institute for Defense Analyses, which was my last official job before re-entering Caltech as a graduate student in the Applied Mathematics department (now the Applied and Computational Mathematics department).

In summer 1997 I worked for MIT Lincoln Labs. It was an enlightening experience in a number of ways.

From early 1997 to 1998 I was under the thrall of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), which pretty much wiped me out for a year. Early 1998 I found some anti-oxidant pills which helped treat the more severe enervating symptoms. I have since resumed a normal life.

In June 1998 I started a sabbatical from Caltech. The main goal was to rest and recover; I also wanted to begin writing a Practical Approach to Living. With serendipitous timing I move to San Diego to live with my lady love. Alas, we moved too quickly and things fell apart by the year's end.

Around that same time I started an alternative lifestyle, namely living out of an Recreational Vehicle which I dubbed my Portable Habitat (PH). The PH and I slowly crawled up the coast following jobs.

In Sep 1998 I began working for an e-commerce startup company called LaunchPad and helped them ship their first product: eWallet. Catching the startup bug, I then worked briefly for EntryPoint and @ $treetPrices. In April 2000 I became CTO of QIXO, where I helped grow the company until December 2000.

At the dawn of the true third millenium, I founded Kim Lumbard, Inc. to begin implementing a practical Rental Ecology.

I also started living in a van. ;-) This one is called the Turtle Shell (TS) and represents the next step in achieving the ideal of Mr. Mobility. Around this time I took some trips to India that profoundly changed the way I look at the world.

Most of 2001 was spent trying to start a thermoelectrics company in conjunction with Caltech and JPL. Sadly, nothing ever came of it, but it was an excellent lesson in the pitfalls of n-party negotiation.

In 2002 my biological clock began ticking and I decided that it was time to settle down and raise a family. To that end I moved to the east coast and made the transition to Mr. Stability. I moved to New York City and got a programming contract at Biscuits and Bath, a doggie daycare center.

Also in 2002 my decade long quest to understand Happiness came to fruition. I began writing the Pursuit of Happiness Series in earnest. My initial estimate is that it will take another decade to finish but in the end it should be what is greatly needed for our times: a straightforward handbook on how to be Happy in our modern world. Check it out!

2003 felt like a year of unfocused dissipation to me, as I bebopped from coast to coast with no clear plan and constantly changing goals. Many weeks were consumed by computer games! On the other hand, the ample free time was spent pleasantly with friends, and allowed me to participate in the Jentel program. The freedom also germinated some fresh perspectives on the world and my Reformation movement, in particular Support For All.

Early in 2004, everything started coming together with the Human Assembly and the This is Your Land! Tour. I know what it takes to restore American democracy in our fair land, and I will not rest until everyone has the representation with participation that they deserve. Later that same year, I got derailed from my missionary democracy. I fell into a black hole of serious proportions, and then spent the last part of the year travelling and regrouping.

The next year I inched closer to settling down on the east coast. After a relaxing interlude in Houston, TX spent making cabichairs, I finally arrived. The first thing I did was start up the New World Campaign, which enjoyed a nifty half year run. During that time I learned the basics of media editing and online publication.

I migrated to southern CA in early 2006, and finding that wasn't hot enough, went to Brasil for Carnaval. It was revealing in many ways: resonating not only with my India experience, but also reaffirming the personally important. I married some good friends of mine, and then went into a period of hermitage later in the year.

2007 will be a year of many changes for me, from "1,001 Books" to the "Great Estrogen Experiment". Most dramatically, I've decided to re-enter the material world once again. Mid 2007 I decided to accept the post of CTO at Biscuits & Bath and started the workaday grind for the first time in a decade. Quickly deciding that wasn't for me, I returned to freelance consulting.

Near the start of 2008 I had an idea for creating inexpensive wind turbines. I spent most of the year and the start of the next trying to sell it off. During that time I had many other renewable energy ideas, not the least of which was for a new kind of supercapacitor.

The next year was very exciting for me, as I finally figured out the root causes of the Chronic Fatigue that had been afflicting me for the last dozen years: mercury poisoning, which induced sulfite poisoning, which finally led to adrenal fatigue. All three conditions are reversible, and I am hell bent on regaining my previous health and energy.

A couple years later I feel better than I have in a decade, and have begun kicking booty again. I've proven some more math conjectures about the primes, started developing a successor to Magic the Gathering Online, and began writing a health guide for curing modern disease. I'm entering a second wind in my life... and I feel good.

You can check out my resume here to get particulars on my sordid work history, if that type of stuff interests you. 8^)

Voyeuristic Invitation

I'd like to give everyone the opportunity to learn more about me than they could ever possibly want to know, so I've compiled a selection of communiques and essays from critical periods in my life called the Essential Kim.

"I laughed, I cried, I said to myself: 'Holy shit! Who puts stuff this personal on the internet for everyone to see?'" -- Almost every reader of the Essential Kim.

I also kept a daily diary on LiveJournal for half a year in 2006 as a gift for a friend; it's a nice slice of life / log of ideas.

In 2010 I took the plunge and joined the Facebook revolution. It's good for random information and interactions with friends, but I yearn for more substantial and sustained relationships.

Learning

I want to deepen my understanding and increase my knowledge.

Research

I wish to engage in pure scientific, applied technological, and practical sociological research.

In college I did research in the field of Error-Correcting Codes (ECCs) with Dr. Robert J. McEliece of the Electrical Engineering Department at the California Institute of Technology. In particular, I counted the number of convolutional codes with an eye toward developing better convolutional codes, which at the time were the best bet for good codes. In the 1990s Turbo Codes took the field by storm, coming up with near Shannon Limit performance, and incidentally making most of my work obsolete. C'est la vie. ;-) A good resource on ECCs is the Caltech Communications Group; it has a number of links to other sites.

Being a mathematician at heart, I also have a strong interest in mathematical problems. My forays have mainly been into prime numbers and algebraic constructions. I've developed an elementary technique called Algebraic Prime Residue Analysis and have derived explicit formulas for every even spacing density function. I'm trying to leverage this result to show that that there infinite number of primes separated by every even spacing, which at one shot would prove both the Twin Prime Conjecture and the Goldbach Conjecture. If you're going to dream, might as well dream big. :-)

In 2001 I became interested in ThermoElectric (TE) devices, which generate a temperature difference upon the application of current, or more interestingly, generate power in the presence of a thermal gradient. My interest was prompted mainly by my good friend Jen Herman, who is making some revolutionary TEs at Jet Propulsion Labs.

In 2002 my research interests turned biological, practical, and highly spiritual at the same time. I have long been pursuing the question of Happiness and recently discovered that many empirically observable human behaviors have a well-known basis in our biology. So the hunt has begun to connect neurology, biochemistry, psychology, and spirituality under a single descriptive theory. For the first time ever in human history it is possible to give a sound objective description to the subjective phenomena of happiness.

The focus of 2003 was to give myself a thorough liberal arts education toward the end of designing a practical Reformation movement. It seems to me that our world is changing to favor to large scale organizations (like capitalist corporations), and as a side effect is becoming less amenable to individual private citizens. I believe it is possible to reform key political, financial, economic, and taxation structures to make our society more Human-Scale again.

For the next several years my interests were practical and personal. Under the onslaught of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome I was forced to learn a great deal about human biology, and have made a number of interesting discoveries. I've also become more sober about medicine, public health, and analyzing the sociopolitical forces that drive our modern food markets.

After finally finding a cure for Adrenal Fatigue, I started entering another golden era of pure research. Returning the APRA, I was able to prove a few more conjectures about the prime numbers: basically Andrica's Conjecture and those that follow from it. Moreover, I also demonstrated a strong conditional proof: if the spacing between primes is bounded by any log power, all prime infinity conjectures immediately follow. Thus, I see proving Cramer's Conjecture or something similar to be the cornerstone to breaking open a large segment of prime analysis.

Enrichment

I want to enrich people's lives.

Self-Help

I wish to help people help themselves.

In 1996 I created a new "philosophy" that I call a Practical Approach To Living, or PAL for short. PAL is mainly concerned with Actuality: the process by which an mental idea becomes a physical reality. In particular, it breaks down in a detailed fashion the complex Actualization process, and then talks about how to develop each one of the necessary parts.

PAL is an outgrowth of years of conversations with people, who seemed to have similar stumbling blocks to achieving what they wanted. Most people have an almost functioning Actualization process, with maybe a few parts critical parts missing. After they develop the whole thing, from beginning to end, it becomes a powerful force helping them to tranforms their lives as they see fit.

I originally conceived of PAL as a large writing project, a massive compendium describing the philosophy. However, I believe that there might be a better formulation for it. PAL has grown as I have, and perhaps a living representation of it that could grow as its adherents grow would be best.

In mid 2002 the form finally crystallized into the Pursuit of Happiness Series. It will begin as a website, migrate into book form, be translated into audio and video series, and then hopefully end up as a living spiritual practice that is taught in schools. ;-)

Writing

I wish to share my experiences with other people through as many mediums as possible, both temporary (such as memories) and permanent (such as literature).

The main menu is probably the best roadmap to my writing; let me repeat it here for you:

Some notable reads:

There's still quite a bit I'd like to write up before I head into the great beyond... not the least of which is all my traffic violations and vehicular incidents (up to 40 states and 53 incidents in 2007).

Also, further down this page you can find quite a few documents on role playing in the D&D section.

Humor

I wish to lighten people's lives with humor.

Friends send me a lot of humorous emails. I've compiled them into several categories, and you can view them in two ways.

Jokes Alphabetical Most Recent
Dirty Stuff Alphabetical Most Recent
Humorous Lists Alphabetical Most Recent
Top "10" Lists Alphabetical Most Recent
Other Funnies Alphabetical Most Recent

I update these collections every six months or so, so feel free to come back and enjoy some more... The "most recent first" listing is so you can keep reading new jokes as I add them; someday I may even put a timestamp into my listings.

Social

I want to interact positively with all people.

D&D

I wish to provide role players with spectacular memories.

I have been involved with role-playing for many years now; I've been playing since the games first came out and DMing from about 1983. My first game was Dungeons and Dragons, and though I have tried numerous other systems it has remained my favorite, despite being fraught with numerous inequities. After a dormant decade after college of non-play, the 3.5 rules reinvigorated my interest enough not only to create a new incarnation of Kim D&D but also to run another game. If you are unfamiliar with RPGs, check out my Introduction to Role-Playing (in Kim D&D).

I'm perpetually asked what campaigns I've run, so I've decided to finally compile them together for posterity. Some of my campaigns have been pretty well documented, so I've included any online resources that might apply. Enjoy!

I've got a killer idea for my next campaign...
it's so good I need to make a new gaming system to play it,
and a new website to host it. :-O
I'm still looking for two female players

I have long entertained the notion of writing some of these adventures up as fantasy novels. I have since realized that I don't have the time to do so! So instead I will probably write up some of the more spectacular moments in highlight form.

Dinners

I wish to enjoy the company of others.

Okay, I'll admit it. I love fresh food and hate leftovers. In fact, I love food so much I usually eat it three or four times a day. :-) I also like going out to eat, especially with bunches of people. In the past I've hosted bi-weekly dinner outing at restaurants, Outdoor Mobile Dinner Theatres in the woods, and eating events in every place imaginable. Bon Vivant!

In 2002 I started the Healthy Organic Potluck Social (HOPS) series with my good friend Candace nee Young. We subscribed to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in New York City that provided us an abundance of fresh vegetables and some fruits (depending on the season). The HOPS series has been both great fun (having people over for dinner every week) and somewhat sobering (insofar as it is becoming increasingly difficult to find healthy non-sugary non-processed foods).

All in all, I find good food and conversation to be a great way to spend time. Remember Groo the Wanderer's sage wisdom on dining: "I have not eaten since my last meal!"

A Woman

I wish to fall mutually in love with a caring woman, and with her raise a healthy family.

SWM 40 ISO SF 25-35. I am 6'1", Dark Hair, Brown Eyes, Medium Build. Patient, well-spoken, introspective, and honest; tending toward focused intensity in all my endeavors. Looking for someone conversational, strong-willed, passionate, and understanding. Interested in a friend, companion, confidante, and lover? So am I; please contact me.

A note for matchmakers: I welcome any and all matchmaking attempts, as long as I am aware of them. My ideal mate has four essential ingredients:

  1. Conversation - Someone who enjoys and encourages warm and stimulating conversation

Communication is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. While there are many non-verbal forms of communication, I am a highly aural person and something of a wordsmith. I need the communication that comes from conversation: someone who can clearly speak of feelings, desires, and fulfillment, both her own and mine. And there are other benefits to my oral fixation... ;-)

  2. Integrity - A rock solid sense of self

Truth is a powerful ally that enables us understand and deal with the world; the personal reflection of truth is honesty: with ourselves and with others. While there are many ways of dealing with life's issues, I prefer the honest identification and fulfilment of needs. I need a partner with personal integrity, who can embrace their own truth irrespective of whether it conforms to social norms.

  3. Vitality - A kindred adventurous spirit who revels in a passionate life

Life is a continuing process of natural growth; in fact, one of my covenants is that I vow to grow in perpetual motion. I want to lead a dynamic life and share it with my partner, and I need someone that finds it invigorating rather than unsettling. Ideally, we would be sources of inspiration for one another for new and bold adventures. Such a lifestyle is sometimes unpredictable, but it is always exciting and vital.

  4. Compassion - A kind soul that sincerely feels for others

I have led a fortunate life, and I wish to share my abundance with others. This social enrichment takes many forms, some small, some grand, and is a persistent guiding force in my life. I need a partner that can identify with my deep desire to help people, if not actively participate in my quests to improve the lot of humanity.

Lastly, qualities I prefer but are not essential:

  • Goals : Has Them. I'd like an experienced partner who knows what she wants from life (and from me).
  • Body : Voluptuous. I prefer a woman comfortable with herself and who enjoys sensuous physical affection.
  • Race : Non-Korean. <cough, cough> This is an Oedipus thing.
  • Children : Wants Them. Not previously married and no current children would be nice.
  • Religion : None Needed. I'd like a partner with spirit, belief, and faith; religion is optional.
  • Btw, my online matchmaking site of choice is OkCupid: free, funny, and eerily accurate at times. Feel free to check out my profile there!

If you want get in touch with me then call. Don't let the fact that I have no message on my voice mail deter you from leaving me a message. ;-) [Note that my supposedly lifelong 700 number was cancelled by AT&T on November 5th, 1999. Find Now!

The best way to get ahold of me in real time is by my cell phone. Of course, "getting ahold of me" is figurative, since my actual physical location could be literally anywhere. ;-)

Here's a glimmer of where I am right now, courtesy of Google Latitude:

Lastly, though my name is not Ken Everett Lombard, or Kin Everet Lumbar, or Kem Evret Lombar I've included these variants on this page so that it will get picked up by search engines. Several of my friends have tried to find me via web searches and been unable to since they were searching for a different name!
