Club Activities
In order to best serve our community, Hawaiian Club sponsors a variety of events. Many are open to the entire Caltech Community (not just members), and a few are even open to guests outside of Caltech.
Current and Upcoming Activities
For a list of upcoming activities, times, and locations, please refer to the calendar on the main page. You can also sign up to receive reminders by subscribing to our email list (send an email to lilinoe [at] ugcs.caltech.edu).
A (non-inclusive) list of things we do
Aloha Fridays
It's Aloha Friday, no work 'til Monday!...well, ideally. Aloha Friday is a traditional Hawaii club event at which all members of the Caltech community are invited to chill, share local grindz, and talk story (i.e. relax, eat local foods and hang out). Aloha Friday is generally held once a month (3 times per term) near the undergraduate houses.
The next Aloha Friday is: October 8 or 15, 2004.
Cultural Lessons
The Hawaiian Club is actively committed to encouraging the study of Hawaii's native arts and culture. To this end, we attempt to offer lessons in these subjects or sponsor club members' attendance of Polynesian cultural classes and workshops offered outside of Caltech.
This term, we will be holding one-time polynesian dance workshops. Regular lessons on the Caltech campus may resume in the next term. For more information on this or other dance opportunities in the Pasadena/San Gabriel area, please refer to our Hula page.
Food Workshops
Starting sometime in the Fall 2004 term, Hawaiian Club hopes to host workshops on the preparation of both traditional and modern Hawaiian cuisine. Please contact us for more information.
Outside Opportunities
Since Caltech is a limited community, Hawaiian Club seeks to keep its members informed of outside learning opportunities. We maintain a list of and send email reminders about a variety of outside Hawaii-related events, including luaus, cultural festivals, and cultural instructors. In many cases, we also sponsor attendace of these events.
See a list of these opportunities, or sign up to receive e-mail notification of these events.
On-Campus Events and Partnerships
We are proud to be able to share Hawaii's culture and aloha spirit with other people and organizations on campus. We participate annually in the International Student Programs's International Week and the Asian Pacific Student Union's Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and recently assisted the Tech Express in planning their Anniversary Luau. We are happy to form new partnerships and offer assistance to many Caltech offices and events. Please let us know if you are interested. We'd love to hear from you!
