German Chocolate Cake
1 1/2 c flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
4 oz package sweet baking chocolate
1 c sugar
3/4 c shortening
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 c buttermilk or sourmilk
Coconut Pecan Frosting
Chocolate Butter Frosting
- Grease and lightly flour 2: 8x1/2" or 9x1/2" rounds
- Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt - set aside
- In saucepan combine chocolate and 1/2 water
- Cook and stir over low heat until melted. Cool
- Beat sugar and shortening until fluffy
- Add eggs and vanilla. Beat on low until just combined
- Beat on medium 1min
- Beat in chocolate mix
- Add flour mix alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mix
- Pour batter into prepared pans
- Bake at 350 for 30min or until toothpick comes out clean
- Cool in pan 10min
- Remove from pans and cool thoroughly
- Spread coconut-pecan forsting over top of layers
- Stack
- Frost sides with chocolate butter frosting
NOTE: double the ingredients and make 4 layers in place of 2. There is more than enough icing for 4 layers with the 2 recipes
