I have spent the last 10 years of my professional career seeking and solving highly-challenging problems, learning about and applying new technologies, always focusing on solid communication and understanding with clients. My key has been flexibility, as I'll happily design and architect, lead a team, evangelize or code away on a product or concept depending on the need.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

• July 13th, 2004 to present - Senior Advertiser Services Engineer :: Overture Services Ltd. (Europe) / Yahoo Search Marketing Europe
  Moved to UK to found the European Direct-Sales Technical Services (DTS) team. Previous US role was extended to provide more general and much-needed in-market technical guidance and leadership to the advertiser side of the business, and bringing project management and consultancy to high-profile, technically complex projects with external clients. Clients included Kelkoo, 1&1, Edreams, and the European branches of Expedia and EBay, among others. In addition to previous ongoing work:
  • Adapted current toolset to be i18n-safe, applied to European and Asian markets.
  • Lead YSM Europe technical resources for integration with the 1&1 Searchmarketing Traffic Panel in a partnership with 1&1 Internet, the world's largest web-hosting company.
  • Designed and developed the new data processing platform in OO Perl to handle YSM's new offer model.

• November 4th, 2002 to July 12th, 2004 - Senior Developer, External Systems :: Overture Inc. / Yahoo Search Marketing Inc.
  Hired in as pilot member of Direct-Sales Technical Services (DTS) team, designing and developing custom solutions to the problems of Yahoo Search Marketing's premier advertiser clients. Client list included the full range of the largest advertisers on the web, such as EBay, Expedia, Travelocity and Amazon, affecting millions of dollars in revenue. Accomplishments include:
  • Enhanced and stabilized the early platform on which all data manipulation was being done.
  • Created many of the core data processing utilities in OO Perl, with a focus on optimization and flexibility.
  • Used BerkeleyDB and MySQL for varying data persistence solutions, and provided Perl APIs into internal and external XML and SOAP services.
  • Created prototype Web Service layer around data manipulation platform as a proof of concept to the business.
  • Involved in direct client meetings, brainstorming solutions to individual problems, helping to create specifications and developing the final result.
  • Provided training, guidance and technical leadership to new team members as the team grew, globally.

  Team efforts ranged far and wide, from custom XML feeds integrated into the Search Marketing back end, to tools to generate new and relevant keywords, to custom reports delivered directly to clients. Original team efforts were used as prototypes for core YSM functionality, internal tools and new products released to market.

• November 4th, 1998 to February 8th, 2002 - Systems Developer and Programmer :: MP3.com
  Joined the company in its infancy as the 6th employee hired, part of the Founders Group. Contributed design and development on a multitude of key projects, front and back-end, as MP3.com grew from a tiny operation to the world's premier music service provider and largest music download web site. Early efforts included:
  • Wrote the first MP3.com news content management system, administration layer and publishing mechanism.
  • Was responsible for customer authentication layer, and along with a team drove the transition to Apache mod_perl for performance.
  • Lead the Statistics team, developed the back end platform and architecture for data processing, and provided transparency and analysis during our critical IPO phase.

  Role expanded to become lead developer of Customer Management systems including responsability as primary DBA for all Content and Customer Management systems. In this role:

  • As DBA maintained outstanding uptime and performance standards for the system, provided and enhanced monitoring, and custom replication and failover wrapped around MySQL.
  • As lead developer was responsible for Customer API, focusing on optimization of data access for our 6+ MM users.
  • For the Data Warehouse project, was lead developer and architect of ETL phase, and contributor to overall design.
  • Ended my tenure by rescuing our major DB migration project, driving the transition of all of our Content DBs to Sybase after being called into the failing project at the 11th hour.

  MP3.com, Inc. was acquired by Vivendi Universal in May 2001, and the platform and technologies on which it was built licensed to major music players.

• April 4th, 1998 to October 30th, 1998 - Systems Developer and Programmer :: eToys Inc.
  Joined soon after VC. Helped design and build early stage web systems, shopping cart, and dynamic site content for the largest online toy store on the web.

• September 15th, 1997 to March 17th, 1998 - Research Analyst :: Arete Associates
  At Arete Associates, built computational tools for and perform data analysis in a variety of remote sensing and oceanography related projects.
