Peter Plavchan's Web Site

I'm a graduate student at UCLA in the Physics and Astronomy Department. I'm studying to pursue a career in academia, and to become the first person in my family to earn a PhD.

I officially became a PhD candidate in May 2004, and I earned my Masters degree in Physics in 2002 from UCLA. I graduated from Caltech with honors in 2001 with a degree in Physics. I attended high school at Arlington High School in Lagrangeville, NY for two and a half years. Prior to that, I attended Vestal High School in Vestal, NY. Vestal is where I did most of my "growing up", although I now call Southern California home.

Since starting college, I've worked for a year at Tanner Research, Inc., for several years at JPL, at Caltech doing various computer-related tasks, and at UCLA as a graduate student researcher and TA.

Web sites of mine:

  • Click here for Arlington Alumni Association web site.

  • Click here for my graduate student web page. On this site you can find out about my research and teaching.

  • Click here and here for web projects I did for humanities classes at Caltech. The first project includes an interactive Javascript puzzle. The second project includes a nifty Java applet of a virtual orrery.

  • Click here for an old Microsoft joke of mine.

Personal Interests:

(Besides the copious amounts of time I sink into my research)
  •   Click here for pictures! (a fast internet connection recommended)

  • I have a one year old chihuahua, Gypsy. You can see more pictures of her on my pictures page.

  • I used to play in a band by the name of Burnout. The songs we wrote and played over 4 years at Caltech are among my favorites. Here's a picture of us playing in Old Town Pasadena. More recently I've learned to play a little guitar. The drums will come back out of the closet once I find someplace to play!

  • I enjoy playing basketball, as well as watching UCLA's perennial quest for the Final Four. Here's a picture from my freshman year of college, when I played on Caltech's NCAA Division III team.

  • I definitely enjoy swimming in the ocean during the summer. Zuma and Huntington Beach are my favorites, although I'm less than five miles away from Santa Monica. Here's a cool picture of me in the ocean.

  • I have been known to write science fiction stories in the past, and I have recently restarted that hobby.

  • This picture sums up rather succinctly my academic experiences at Caltech. Students at Caltech in the 1970s had time to do this to the Hollywood sign, but I spent many hours taking course after course in physics and mathematics covering everything from Quantum Field Theory to contour integration to Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics and so on. Despite all the work, I still had a lot of fun.

  • Finally, for some miscellaneous hobbies of mine - I enjoy web programming (can you tell?), reading science fiction, collecting coins, and following science and technology news. More recently, I've started volunteering instead of watching TV. I go see a lot of movies, play games on my Playstation 2 every once in a long while, and I'm not afraid of the outdoors. I've got a lot I like to do, and I only wish I had more time to do it (who doesn't?).

Web sites I've done for others:

Those that still exist:

  • I am currently responsible for updates to the UCLA Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics web site, including press releases, colloquia and such. I redid the entire home page to include new home page graphics that change every time you reload (thank you JavaScript!)
  • A great kid's web site, Eureka Pad! A long time ago, I developed the site layout and the Java applet game. I also wrote a Windows C++ version of the game not available on the web site.
  • A reconfigurable computing site I developed for Tanner Research, Inc. a long time ago.

Those that have since been redone:

  • My place of residence while at Caltech, Ruddock House.
  • I worked here full-time for a year in 1998/1999 - Tanner Research, Inc. You can still find some of the Java interactive demos I developed for Tanner Labs.
