On Friday, July 16, 1999, a demonstration was organized by ETAN/LA and ETAN/Pasadena at the Indonesian consulate to call upon Indonesia to end paramilitary violence and intimidation in East Timor and guarantee that the August referendum is a free and fair act of self-determination by the East Timorese. The date marks the anniversary of East Timor's "integration" into Indonesia when in 1976 the miliarily occupied East Timor was formally annexed by Indonesia.
