Photos Rant #1

Welcome to my small gallery of SSP pictures. Actually, this collection is incredibly small considering the abundance of pictures I took during that last week of SSP '95. Most of these pictures are taken by me, except for the ones marked otherwise (and the one to the right). Take the time to browse through the pictures, with the thumbnails being links to the larger versions of the corresponding pictures. However, be aware that due to quota limitations on this server, the large images are stored on my computer, so if for some reason my computer is down, those images will not be accessible. Lastly, pictures will be added slowly but surely, so come back soon!

Here are the two dorms where we lived that summer. On the left is Sespe, where the girls got to live. On the right is Matilija, where the guys lived. In the background, you can get a glimpse of Topa Topa, where Gary Horne lived since the guys filled up all the rooms in Matilija. Compare Sespe, with the enclosed lounge and carpeted floors, and Matilija, with the lovely cracked and bug-infested floors and outdoor accomodations. Hmm, looks like I picked the wrong year to attend... Hey, if anyone of you viewers out there are good at programming and/or photography, the two pictures of Matilija seem to inspire some type of VR (perhaps Quicktime). Just a thought.

The first picture to the right is the map room, where we spent all that time looking through those star charts and tracing the patterns of stars so that we could locate our asteroid. And of course we also hunted down our reference stars there as well. the second picture is of the lawn directly outside the lecture hall, from where one can see the Hall of the Sun as well as the room with the measuring engine. More obscured is the courtyard, where I actually fell asleep once, and the windows of the Mac lab.

Here is some of the wildlife and not-so-wild life. At the far left is a picture of a bug taken at the request of Aditi to show her parents just how large the bugs at Thacher really were. I believe this bug is the same type that bit the cat, though I must confess I know that only as a rumor. At the near left is a picture of a spider discovered in Sespe for which I (along with Stas) was dragged into the girl's dorm after dinner so that I could get rid of it. Unfortunately, I was too naive to know that cameras have minimum focusing distances, especially with the point and shoot that I used back then... And to the right is Mary Ellen's cat (whose name I wish I remembered how to spell or pronounce) hiding beneath a table in the TA office.

I'm not quite sure why I have so many pictures of Dr. Stephens, but I guess that's better for him. The picture on the left was taken on his birthday, which we so kindly celebrated despite the pressures of OD night (my pressure was trying to find a decent place to sleep). I tried to zoom in on the birthday card to perhaps see who actually signed the card, but the writing is too fuzzy. The picture on the right was taken on the Twin Peaks hike, with a nice view of Ojai in the background.

Okay, so the picture on the left wasn't actually taken by me, but it was taken by my camera, so that sorta counts. Anyway, that picture (or actually one similar to it) was taken for the scrap book (should I put that up?), and theoretically, we should all appear to be sleeping. However, Jason and Neil both seem to have a problem with this. Okay, so perhaps I shouldn't make fun of Neil, but Jason is fair ground considering he's my roommate now. Go to sleep, Jason. And the other picture was taken in the dining hall. No, I don't know what's in my mouth...probably gum.

Here are two pictures taken by Henry, my cohort in ripping away a piece of SSP to take home with us. But I took more pictures. I technically should have the picture on the left where the Connollys have just been presented with a plaque bearing the names of all the SSP graduates under Leo Connolly's teaching term. However, thanks to an accident with a loose camera back, all I was left with were several obliberated pictures and "fire" on a few others. The second picture is a gem.
Okay, writing these comments has been fun. However, it's five in the morning, and I think I'm keeping Jason awake. Good night.
