Application to Student Investment Fund

[Excerpt from Letter to Student Investment Fund dated March 25, 2002]

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to on behalf of ASCIT, the Associated Students of the California Institute of Technology, to request funding from the Student Investment Fund. In particular, I am requesting money on behalf of the ASCIT Executive Social Committee, which is in charge of all ASCIT social functions, and ASCIT movies, which runs the DVD Library. I do not believe ASCIT has applied to SIF for funding in the past, but this year, due to Student Affairs budget cuts, ASCIT will receive smaller contributions from many Caltech departments that once supported a large portion of our activities. I hope that the Student Investment Fund will be able to help alleviate this burden.

For the Executive Social Committee, I am requesting a total of $2800. This is broken into three categories: $800 for ASCIT lights, $800 for ASCIT Carnival equipment, and $1200 for ASCIT Formal floral arrangements.

$800 of this money will be used towards the purchase of two new additions to the collection of ASCIT lights. These lights are used by the undergraduate Houses, the Graduate students, and a variety of clubs for various purposes. Not only used for interhouse parties anymore, the ASCIT lights have appeared several times in the Catalina Rec Room and Avery House. They were also used at the Caltech Battle of the Bands, a party by the club 4 Elements, and as stage lighting for a performance by the Caltech C. As the demand for the lights grows, it has become important to not just purchase party effect lights, but to purchase intelligent lighting that can be used in stage situations and can be programmed to fit the theme of a party. ASCIT already owns two of these "intelligent" lights - the particular model that was purchased is called a "Pocket Scan" and they cost $400 each. In the past year, ASCIT has purchased several controllers that, in conjunction with these lights, allow full programmability and an infinite number of configurations. Unfortunately, owning only two of these lights does not allow for very dramatic effects. The $800 we are requesting will go towards the purchase of two more Pocket Scans, which will have a profound effect on the quality of lighting ASCIT can provide. Partial funding will be accepted, as the difference will be made up from the ASCIT budget...

Congratulations! Your application for SIF funding has been approved. You have been granted partial funding of $800 for the purchase of new ASCIT lights. While you may require a deposit or UID in the case of damege or loss of the lights, you may not charge for the use of them. Once you have purchased the equipment, contact Suzette Cummings in the Dean's Office with your itemized receipt to be reimbursed. You will only be reimbursed for $800 for your purchase. If you have any questions, please e-mail sif@its.caltech.edu. Enjoy.
