John's Links to Points Beyond
The Home Page of General Chaos
Feeling chaotic? A read through the General's poetry
may be just the ticket for you. While not truly outside my
domain, General Chaos (Plin Shiley, in real life) is certainly
individualistic enough that it'll seem like you've left these
pages, should you choose to visit him. At least, I hope so,
since that's the point.
New Braunfels, Texas
My parents live in New Braunfels, a pleasant sort of town on the edge of the
Texas Hill Country,
about 20 miles from where I spent 9 years of my life (age 9 to 18).
General Chaos has even been known to hang out there. Check it out. (Sorry,
"oompah" music
not included.)
The Unofficial Chick-fil-A Homepage
New Braunfels is actually getting a
Chick-fil-A! There still
aren't but a few in all of southern California... sigh. Their food is
surprisingly edible for a "fast food" joint, and I happen to like
it a lot. If you've got a story to tell
about Chick-fil-A, this is the place for you...
it's got a section like those (former) Heineken phone message ads,
but the letters are actually from real people. Cute.

Earthquakes in Southern California
and the SCEC Data Center
If you're looking for maps, slides, diagrams, and information
about faults and earthquakes in southern California, shake on over to
this first site. If it's current info/updates, links to other seismic sites,
or more scientific information (data on quakes, instruments, networks, etc.)
you seek, the second site (which I help maintain, as well) is for you.
Coincidentally, each site is at least partially maintained by yours truly.
Just because I advertise them shamelessly
on my work page doesn't mean I can't advertise
them here as well.
Postmodernism
Generator
If, on the other hand, you seek a complete lack of information, visit
the Postmodernism Generator. This will present you with an original,
almost convincingly realistic, yet totally meaningless, paper about
some postmodern topic -- The Expression of Praxis: Postcultural
appropriation and subsemanticist discourse, for instance.
Each "paper" is unique, and a good way to cheese off any acquaintances
you have who might be into postmodernism.
California Institute of
Technology
The ol' Alma Mater. For quite some time they had a pathetically boring
Web page. Now they've made it much more exciting --
perhaps too much so? Yeah well, if I had the time (and the help of
multiple designers), my page would look like this, too. Don't expect
to find any postmodernism papers, though. This is the real thing.
Over the Hedge
Home of my favorite comic-strip "Waschbär" (that's a raccoon)
and his equally bizarre turtle-friend, Over the Hedge is
a fine way to get a few laughs with your hosts, R.J. and Verne.
San Gorgonio Wilderness Association
A site dedicated to preserving and celebrating the San Gorgonio
Wilderness, home to the 11,499-ft (3505 m) San Gorgonio Mountain
(highest peak in southern California), several picturesque
meadows, one of only two aspen groves in the region, "The Tarn"
(highest (ephemeral) lake in southern California), and the best
(because they're the only) glacially-carved
features in California south of the Sierra Nevada.
The Kyrgyzstan Freenet Home Page
Honestly, how many times has the average person (and one not
from central Asia) ever been to Kyrgyzstan... or even heard of it?
It turns out, it's quite a nifty place -- and I'm not
just saying that because it's on a zone of tectonic collision
(hence, it's got earthquakes (and a
seismic network)).
So come on, all you non-Kyrgys-types, get off your rear
(figuratively) and go somewhere out of the ordinary!
Assassinations Foretold in Moby Dick!
Answers, quite handily, the challenge made by Michael Drosnin that he
would listen to critics of his book, The Bible Code, when they
"find a message about the assassination of a prime minister encrypted
in Moby Dick". Mr. Drosnin, eat your words. It's amazing what some
people will believe....
Chaotic Poetry
Lin was impressed by the works of General Chaos (at top). Of course,
imitation (even unintentional) is the sincerest form of flattery, so
why shouldn't she be? Check out Lin's E-zine, Chaotic Poetry,
if that kind of stuff moves you.
The KPMG Theme Song
And now for something completely different, and cheerfully horrifying:
the theme song ("Vision of Global Strategy") for KPMG, a company
that has a "no link" policy, apparently, according to
this
article on Wired about their
letter to Chris
Raettig. Everybody, sing along!
Cheers, and bon voyage.
