I'm Jaap Weel. I'm a software engineer at Facebook. Before that, I studied variously at University College Utrecht, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and George Mason University, getting degrees in Computer Science and Economics. (Not all at the same time.)

I grow my beard these days, and people tell me that the picture on the side is nearly useless for recognizing me now. I will in due course shave my beard or update the picture. I promise.

My name

My given names are fully Jacob Johannes, after my late grandfather, but the customary short form of Jacob in Dutch is Jaap, pronounced Yahp. My last name is Weel, pronounced more or less as Vale, rhymes with whale. It is not Ter Weel, Verweel, or Van Weel. (Wheareas the Van Weels are patrician, us Weels are Free Frisian yeomen and proudly so, for we are quite capable of inflating our egos without being made to purchase 75 overpriced copies of Nederland's Patriciaat.)
