Microsoft Internet Explorer 4: Image Thumbnail Preview ActiveX Control
6/21 - 9/21/97

Reviews "Integrating the User Interface to Benefit End-Users: ... integration of Web standards in the Windows user interface makes it possible to provide compelling and useful new features like the file preview shown at left."
-- Internet Standards and Operating Systems-Why Integration Makes Sense, by Joe Belfiore (Microsoft, Windows User Interface Group, Group Program Manager), Microsoft Developer Network News, March 1998.

"The Best Feature: ... True Web Integration, or TWI... is the most important reason to upgrade to IE 4... One of the nifty new TWI features is the Thumbnail view, which comes in handy for folders that contain cryptically named graphics. This feature is also available in the new Web-folder view, where you can display a thumbnail of any compound OLE file (such as an image, Office document, or HTML page) just by clicking its icon."

"One of the best reasons to try Windows Explorer's new Web View option is its built-in thumbnail image viewer for graphics files... select an image file... If the file uses one of the many formats this feature understands, you'll see a small thumbnail version of the image. It's a quick way to browse through picture files without actually opening them."

"Web Integration: Microsoft's decision to bundle enhancements to the operating system along with the browser/Internet suite proves to be one of the strongest arguments to consider switching to IE 4.0....
Navigation within folders has undergone the most noticeable transformation. Folders can be set up to display previews of certain document types such as 32-bit Office applications, images, and HTML pages. It's a great way to peruse your Favorites folder... You'll need to check off the Save Preview Picture under the Properties menu in Word or Office to generate the thumbnails. To view the thumbnail, hover over the document name with the mouse, or single-click if double-click is your default.
Although Web views provide descriptive information about folders and documents, the process needs refinement for widespread adoption."
